2 ways to buy a vintage benz:

1) Locate an unadvertised car that owner may be willing to part with....

This means keeping your eyes open in places like this forum, or walking up to gas station owners who might have customers car at their lot, in for repair. I've bought many cars from people who had no intention of selling them before they spoke with me.

Through unadvertised network you usually get a better car, as seller will cut you a rare honest deal if he likes you and believes you'd give the car a good home. This is especially true if you catch the owner by surprise.

2) Advertised cars, e'bay, etc.....

Here its a pig-in-a-poke - sometimes you can find somebody in dire straights who must sell the car, otherwise you can get stuck with somebody else's problems camouflaged for a quick sale. I've bought 2 cars lately - one was $500 word-of-mouth bargain, low mileage rusty body 240D that just needed clutch..... the other was $1500 no-rust body 240D from e-bay that ended up having a laundry list of problems including collapsed drivers seat, paint, heater motor and fiddly bits that I did not discover until a week after the purchase!

It probably would have been wiser for me to buy one excellent benz instead of 2 crummy ones for the $2,500+ I've invested, but am basically a cobbler at heart who enjoys making one good car out of two with plenty of extra parts left over.

Snib, you've probably got 2 months before Spring break and 4 months left in the school year. If i was you, I'd cut an honest deal with Aaron..... then cut loose across country in the ultimate gangster ass-bandit vehicle, knowing you will have no problems down the road.

Vintage 280SE/SEL repairs, etc.

Glad to hear some positive views on repair and maintenance costs. I am just beginning my quest to restore a 280SEL 4.5 with my son, so I am trying to take in all the educated advice I can. Stay in touch!
