Exclamation ´77 280 C fuel economy

What is the normal fuel usage per 100 km for a M110 engine with a carb?

My car is getting about 200km per tank (75L) with a bad carb. and no, it does not leak any gas.

i suspect this is not normal for this car i would be very happy with 18-20l/100 km
what could i expect after i replace the carb?

I had to do some math to figure this out.

If you are getting 200 km from 75 liters of gas, then you are getting about 6.3 miles per gallon, which is terrible. Miles per gallon (mpg) is the US measure of economy.

Depending on the type of driving, you should get roughly two to three times this mileage - 12.5 to 19 mpg.

Therefore. You currently use 37.5 liters per 100 km. You should be able to improve that to 12.5 - 18 liters per 100 km.

Be sure that your thermostat is getting your engine temperature to 190 degrees Fahrenheit (85 Celcius ?)

Thanks, i also did some math and found out i could have a ´00 Toyota Celica or a VW Golf on a full car loan with the money i spend on gas per month

im having a hard time locating a used carb here but i look forward to cruising with 18 l per 100km.

Why do you think that you have a bad carb that needs to be replaced? You may have a problem that can be fixed, like choke not working, high float level, or fuel return not working.

At the risk of repeating myseslf, are you sure your engine temp is high enough?

the temp only goes to about 60 °c i just got hte Haynes manual for the car and will be looking into it over the weekend

It could be all of the said things ,"like choke not working, high float level, or fuel return not working", but the carb is very worn and will need replacement that is for sure.

I think you will be pleased with the results of a working 85 degree thermostat. Especially since coolant temp partially controls the choke setting.

You might want to do a search of the archives on this one and you will see the degree of trouble these carbs have caused--especially in the state of California, the tight emissions laws+this carb= big bucks to fix.

Hopefuly, Iceland is more lenient--
if there is a need to find a relplacement, Weber and Holley both make 4bbl carbs that can be adapted, and there are a few links on the Web that show this. Let us know how it works out.
