Upper control arm kingpin (outer) bushing replacement
I finally managed to get my brother's 75 300D out of the garage -- YAHOO!!! and got to work on MY cars.... put the new bushing kit in the 280 tonight, what a difference! Drives like a Benz now instead of a drunken Ford!
Didn't take long -- spent more time making the "special tool" to unscrew the bushing than removing and installing them! Didn't actually use it to take the old one out, but needed it to get the new one in. Also got an air bubble in the grease gun, that took a while to fix.... I found the previous installer had put both rubber seals on one end of the kingpin and left the bushing screwed way out on that end ( a hint, perhaps, that the basic caster is off on the subframe, likely due to bad mounts....). This resulted in a completely dry bushing. I greased it fairly well in October -- five shots of grease, and I'm sure some went in, but it was dry, rusty, and loose. It was loose then, too, but I was surprised there was no grease, even on the partially sealed end. The inner bushings are a tiny bit loose, and I still get terrible vibration (feels like wheel tramp) above 75, but I'm planning on replacing the subframe bushings, giving her a tuneup, and getting a front end alignment and new tires when I get my tax return. In the mean time, it's very nice to have it drive in a straight line -- no more lurching toward the ditch if there is a rough spot, and snow may be easier, too! Peter

Good job.
As you can tell from all of my previous posts, I love the W108 chassis and plan on owning one some day. I've been enjoying reading your posts on bringing this one back to life. I can't wait until you get it all sorted out. Keep us posted.
