280SE...Dim Headlights
SURE enjoying my 280SE , its been about a month now..fixing odds and ends but it is an excellent daily driver.
The headlights are not bright and at idle flicker in rhythm to the idle... Do I need a new alternator ..or is there a voltage regulator or?? I have a new battery and Battery cables... Thanks in advance...

Check your alternator output with a cheap VOM meter you WILL purchase at Radio Shack. ($14...) With the engine running, connect meter to the battery. + and -.
You should get 13.8 volts or so. and it should stay steady at that voltage when you rev it, give or take... Actually, you should see it rise a little. If so, your alternator is OK. I am surprised that your battery is not going flat!!!

Sure!
Just go to your JC Whitney catalog and order a pair of Cibie or Hella high beams with H1 bulbs rated at 100watts. Or you can try a cheaper alternative and go with regular halogen replacements. These are much better than the dim tungsten ones in there now.

Best check the wiring! First, check the connectors etc to make sure that you're not only getting correct voltage, but can carry full amperage to feed the lights you've already got.
Second, if you're considering beefing up the lights, make sure the wiring will handle the higher loads; often a major upgrade also means rewiring. You might take a look at http://lighting.mbz.org/home.html for more detailed info.

I believe that Mercedes have had halogen lights in Europe as standard equipment for many years before we americans wised up.
As to 100 watt bulbs, I don't think there would be a problem with the wiring. But, if anyone out there knows, do the headlights use relays?
