Question What's a 220/8 floor shift

Sorry, guys, I'm not a vintage Mercedes expert. I saw a description for a 1972 220D/8, Floor shift model. What does that mean exactly? Is it an automatic? Is it unusual for Mercedes in that era to have a floor shift?

Usually automatics have the shift on the tree (steering column) so it is unusual for an automatic to have the shift on the floor. I cannot tell if that's what they mean for this particular model though.

It means that the shifter is on the center console not the steering column. Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the /8 means post 1968: the "new generation" mercedes. The previous model was a 200d fintail.

Hmm.. I've looked around and I can't find any info on a 220D/8

I found this..
http://fly.hiwaay.net/~gbf/mbmodels.html

115.115 615.913 I4 200D/8 61 3003

The CDROM manual has a 220 D for 72 but it's a 2.2l

Maybe it's a typo?

The owner of this same car claims it's restored and that he put $15,000 into it. It doesn't appear that he's put any high performance engine stuff or fancy wheels or anything on it. Could he really have spent that much on it?

Yes easily but the car stil isn't really worth much more than several thousand because it is not a coupe, convertable or have a large engine. If it has low production numbers that can help but it doesn't mean it will command a higher price on the market especially not now.

I guess /8 does mean 68 and beyond afterall

The /8 meant the replacement, for the fintail W110 series.

All I know is that /8 stands for the W114 style. Well, I'm pretty sure it's the W114, if not then W115 Also, my '69 230 has a center consol shifter, and its an automatic, so I don't see anything strange about it.

The 220D/8 was definitely the post '68 220 Diesel, which ran up somewhere into the mid 70's. My '68 has a 4-speed stick shift which is operated by a very slim stick sticking up out of the center console and topped with a black ball knob. It also has a fairly large corrugated rubber boot at the bottom. I have seen another one of about the same year with an auto trannie, and it was operated by a lever on the steering column. This model car is a W115 chassis.
