Value of a '63 190 gas powered

A guy in town is selling a '63 190 gas powered. The thing is straight as an arrow. It is not running and has been in storage since 1984. It is the slate blue with off white interior. The engine turns over by hand. The chrome is all there but some of it needs redone. It was owned by an old gal that passed away. The brake system needs gone thru as well as the hyd clutch. The odometer reads 29,000 mi and could very well be authentic mileage. I am interested in this car. What do you guys think this car is worth running? Let me know quick! Chris

Underpowered comes to mind. If you like the body style, look for a 66 - 67 230. Same car with a 6 cyl.

On an engine which has been sitting that long I would replace all the valve springs before starting it up... very likely one or more will break soon from being compressed so long... and could damage something else when it does...

These don't come on the market very often, so you get to set the market price. Personally, I would look for a 0 - $500 purchase price, since what you put into getting it right will probably exceed what you can sell it for.

But then I'm not in love with it.

Thanks guys. I to am not in love with the thing but it is all there and I was considering buying it, get it running and stopping and re-sell it. I owned a '67 200D and it was about the slowest thing I ever drove except the BMW Isetta I owned when I was 14yrs old!!

That's why I suggested a 66 - 67 230. Much more powerful and a lot faster.

If the price is right and there's no rust, it might be worth considering to fix up and enjoy. As the 4 cyl Finbacks aren't hot collectibles yet, forget about making a quick buck. The gas 190 shouldn't be nearly as slow as your 200D.

190c 80HP DIN / 90HP SAE
200D 55HP DIN / 60HP SAE

Happy Motoring, Mark

Nevermind the nay-sayers, MotorHead....

You've got to laugh at anybody who calls the 190 gasser a "slow" car..... as if traveling 75-80mph in the 6.9 means you are going faster than anybody doing the same speed in the 190c.

Heckflosse (finbody) MB's sell from $2.5 - 5G in original/excellent condition. Has it got the manual sunroof?

Crunch the numbers, anticipating expenses (replacing ALL engine seals, rubber mounts, rebuilding the carb and hydraulic master/slave clutch cylinders, and possibly installing fresh soft-metal, aftermarket Swedish piston rings designed not to cut into the bores). When you pull the cyl.head you can install new vlave springs too, as Leatherman suggests..... but never, ever let any machine shop 'plane' the cyl.head.

Think $500 - $1,000 as initial purchse..... if you are willing to store the car for investment purposes (doing your own work) then you will not lose a nickel assuming the cosmetics are as perfect as you say.

Older cars are always slow turnover products, but it would amaze me if nobody wants to pay at least $2,500+ for '63 190c in perfect running condition.

Scrap metal?? NEVER!!! Like i said, you've got to laugh at anybody who values cars on acceleration capabilities alone.

These guys should ride motorcycles if speed is all they crave.

I have to agree with DieselDog. It's not so much about speed with these old cars. You could get a beat up used honda that will out accelerate a 66-67 230S.
If this is cosmetically nice it would be a crime for it to go to the crusher. How many 190's are left in the world? (10))
The bottom line will likely not add up favorably but I hope somebody will be able to fix this car up.

W110 190c : Top Speed 93.2 mph (90.1 automatic)
0-62 18 sec (22 Auto)

W110 66-68 230: Top Speed 108.74 mph (106.88 automatic)
0-62 13 sec (15 automatic
