108 rear suspension-

Dear All-

Are there different shock absorber applications for hydro compensator rear suspension in the 108? Did every SEL 108 have this set-up, or did some come with the standard spring? I am not sure which set-up my new 108 has, and I need to replace the rear shocks- brand recommendations (other than the obvious Bilstein?)

Cheers,

JAS

To the best of my knowledge the shocks are the same whether you have the spring compensator or the $1,200 hydropnuematic compensator.

The hydraulic compensator was stock and most cars were upgraded later on to the spring (mainly because of cost). If you're looking for new shock absorbers, I can say that the BOGE units I put on my 1970 280SE were pretty nice, rode somewhat softer than the Bilsteins but I was pretty pleased with their performance overall. I'd suggest replacing all four shocks if the fronts are pretty old. You will be amazed at the difference.

Thanks for the advice- the front pair is very recent, but the rears are shot. I'd rather replace the pair of them, and save my money for that Timevalve stainless exhaust!

DIY?

How difficult a job is it to replace the rear shocks on my 108 myself? I have good knowledge about how such things work, but limited experience, time-wise. Any pitfalls i should be wary of, or is this as brainless as it seems?

Thanks,

JAS

Rear shocks on the 108 are a breeze. Nothing special with the replacement, a very straight forward job. Just back her up on a set of ramps and crawl underneath.
