Fuel pump Question for 280se owners

I have a 1972 280se and you can hear the fuel pump run (as long as the car key is in the on position mind you) all of the time. Is this normal or should it only cut on to maintain pressure?

Clunker, I was waiting for a more knowledgeable respondent to your question, but I'll give it a shot. I'm relying on memory, as Dad bought his new in '69 and traded it nine years later, but my recollection is that the pump was on if the ignition was. I recall only one point on which the fuel pump needed attention: If the car ran well, the pump was fine. If the pump wasn't fine, it was dead and so was the car. Dad eventually started carrying a spare after spending an unscheduled weekend in Indianapolis instead of home 300 miles farther north!

IN reply to the original question,

If your car has an M110 engine (DOHC) with D-Jetronic then the fuel pump should prime for 1-2 secs before the starter turns. When the engine is running the fuel pump works continuously. The fuel pump in this model is not particularly quiet.

I assume you're talking about a 108-body 280SE with the SOHC M130 six--or do you have a 116-body 280SE with the M110? 1972 was the transition year between the two.

72 280SE is a W108, the W116 280 SE was much later (the DOHC 6 had a carb up to 76).

Fuel pump runs while ignition is one whether engine is on or not.

its 15$ cheap fix you prob dont need this but solved tons of probs for me
by the way u prob know to change fuel filter is crucial to keep pump from burnin out

Carbureattor and Fuel Injection 108's 116's

In reply to psfred...

"72 280SE is a W108, the W116 280 SE was much later (the DOHC 6 had a carb up to 76)."

The 280S carbureattor model was made continuously in 108, 116 and 126 form. In 108 form it was with twin dual barrel Zeniths. In 116 form with a single Solex four barrel and this was also used I think, in the 126 280S. You may not be familiar with the later model Carbureattored S Classes in the USA as they were not offered here without Fuel Injection since sometime early/middle in the 116 model life. Other countries however still had them. MY 1979 116 280S had the Solex carb in South Africa. And I recall driving a 1980 116 280S with same carb back home as well.

The 280SE was fuel injected continuously in all three series across different engine ranges 130, 110 etc without interruption.

- Peter.
