So I have rebuilt the lowers on the spare set of carbs I have and I was wondering what I could lubricate them with?

If you are referring to the linkage, I would use a lightweight oil like 3 in 1, or ATF.

What about the butterflies?

Butterflies like eucalyptus oil. :-)

Actually, I don't know since those are supposed to be a tight fit. A little WD40 couldn't hurt.

LOL.. I used a GUNK cleaning/lubricating oil to clean them up.. I guess it's like WD40.. One of the set's had some wear on the rod that the butterfly wings fits into. Since it's not revolving at 3000rpm I don't think there's too much to be worried about.

There was also some rust on various surfaces of the lower block that I scrubed off..I wondered how it ever managed to develop there.

just a thought but did you check for flatness? if you see rust on the gasket or inside makes me think leaks or warps?

The top parts are as flat as can be since I sanded them down. I have been rebuilding the lower sections which are cast iron.. I guess the ones on the car could be warped. I won't know until I take them off but I'll check the ones I have rebuilt.. they seem pretty good though.

But the rust buildup was actually inside the bores below the butterflies. There was also a little bit on the bottom near the lip with a scraped off so that it was not raised.

My suspicion is that it's the seals between the rectangular spacers. The first thing I installed these I have a hard time removing th eold paper gaskets. This time around I was planning on giving those a good sanding to make sure they surface was flat. I haven't been able to find new ones. I imagine they can be gotten but for what cost?

Gunk is not an oil, but an emulsifying cleanser. It will have stripped off all lubrication from the spindles. I would go for 3 in 1 here.

GUNK is a brand name.. The can says it's a lubricator but I will apply 3 in 1.

Here's pic of the cleaned up carb bootms.. These are the bottoms that were originally on the car when I bought it.

To check their flatness I just sandwiched them
together and the tops parts fit together real nice but the undersides do seem a bit off. I'm not sure how much of a problem that might be.. I will have to take them apart again and place them on plate glass to see which is warped more.

I guess if they ar ewarped I can sand them down just like I did the carb tops? This will probably take some effort since they are cast iron. I just would expect that a little bit of warp would be okay since the fit is not as large or as complex as the tops.

Anybody sand their bottoms before?
