w100s Anyone know anything about them?

Does anyone know what a '81 w100 runs? (nada or bluebook?) I heard that they have suspension problems... Anyone know of other problems?

Can't give you a price idea, but can fill in a bit about the beast. The W100, aka 600 sedan or pullman, has very few systems that aren't both highly complex and unique to the model. Everything from window lifts to seats to assisted closing for the doors is hydraulic--even the sunroof. The suspension is pneumatic with automatic pneumatic load leveling. AFAIK, the engine and drivetrain are actually quite reliable, but even then the engine was never made in large numbers. Parts therefore, whether for engine or other systems, are often unique to this car, and will be expensive even for an MB. Fewer than 3000 were made in the 18 years the car was in production.
They're incredible cars; an acquaintance had one in the 70's that I was in a few times. They need a mechanic who understands the particular model and a deep, deep checkbook to really be taken care of properly; restoration is not for the faint of heart or of bank account.
I've always had a very large thing for the 600 sedan, but I also have a large thing for Trumpy wooden cruisers of the 1950's-60's. Either is most properly a project for someone with the taste and commitment to want to do it right, and the resources to never worry about the price tags involved--not me unless I win a large lottery!

Thanks for the reply. An ad in the paper didn't pan out. It turned out to be a chop shop stretch of a 560sel.

Oh well...

A W100 can run anywhere from 20gs to well over 120gs, depending on the model, condition, history, etc. The man to see about one is Karl H. Middelhauve, do a search on yahoo and you will get to his site. A Grand 600 is not for the faint of heart or wallet.

You may also try www.m-100.cc
People there actually own those cars and can tell you more about them . It looks however like the ad was a misprint. Too bad. 1981 would be one of the youngest 600s around.
