Factory build sheet

In order to confirm that my 220 SEb had the original engine, I MBUSA Classic Center for a copy of the original factory build sheet. This is a free service by the way. I received this attachment, which is in German, that confirms my engine #. Does anyone out there know the definition of what the other numbers represent? Since my car has european headlights, does this piece of paper tell me if this was a european delivery?

Am probably misunderstanding your question - but if the 220SE was not delivered from Europe in 1963.... where on earth did it come from???

Presently MB builds cars all over the world - such as the Alabama ML's.... economy vans at Brazil and Spain.... even French three cylinder micro diesel cars that get 60+ mpg. Top shelf SE's are now and have always been manufactured in Germany.

Possibly this link is where you obtained your documents.... http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container.jsp?/heritage/center.jsp&menu=4_1 ......great source for vintage technical literature.

What I meant by European delivery was, was this car delivered in Europe with European specs, driven and then brought to the U.S.?

Out of curiosity, does your car have the original engine?

Yes. I am assuming so, since the numbers match those on the build sheet.

Gregg,

I can't quite make out the little numbers, but, I can tell you that wherever it has the word "Lack" and a number with it, that this number is your paint code.
For the other options you should look at the second row...the one that contains the numbers 1 3 9 in it.
There are two smaller digits above that number. For instance: Lets say that the printed number just above the 1 is a 49, you have option number 491.

Other words you might find...

Schicht-Nr = Shift #
Aufbau-Nr = Build #
Fahrgestell-Nr = Chassis #
Auftrags-Nr = Order #
Austatt. = Option

From what I could make out your Benz has options 215, 401, 423, 491, 503, 513, 529, and 641

wenig gewuenscht = item deleted (by customer) - In your case looks like 720 got deleted.

The rest I can't make out. If you can post what else it says on there, I can tell you what it means.

Hope this helps a little...

-Larry

Greg,
I realize you have a copy of the build sheet, however, the original build sheet (actually an IBM data card) that is in the glove box of my 71 280SE has a explanation of the codes on the back of the card. Very intresting info, tells how the car was originally equipped. My .02 worth!

German translations

Larry,
Here are the rest of the terms that you couldn't make out that I would appreciate your translating for me:
Getriebe - block 6
Vorderachse lt. - block 12
Vorderachse re. - block 19
Hinferachse - block 7
Rader - block 13
Beralfung 5-fach - block 20
Lenkung DB - block 8
Lenkungsschlob - block 14
Tur-und Toakschlob - block 21
Schalnwarfer - block 15
Schalbanwischer - block 22
Koffer -und Handschuhkastenschlob - block 16

I am not positive of some of the spelling, as the small printed "ch" almost looks like a "dn".
Thanks, Gregg

Here you go..

Transmission
frontaxle - left
frontaxle - right
rearaxle
wheels
Tires
Steering
steering lock
door and tank lock
Headlights
windshield wipers
Trunk and glovebox lock

There is a letter that looks like a B, but it is actually a sharp S, and is nowadays written with a double S instead.
As in Handschuhkastenschloss

Have fun!

Build codes

Larry, Thanks a lot.

Jerry, Since you have a card that defines the options codes, could you tell me what options are:
401, 423, 491, 503, 519, 641
These are what's listed on my build sheet.

You're welcome!

Out of curiosity, is the interior black, and the exterior brown...maybe a dark brown; and did it come with whitewall tires?

Larry,
The exterior is black and the interior is saddle brown. I am not the original owner, so I don't know if it originally came with whitewall tires. I do know that it has been repainted black over an original white because there is evidence of that in the engine compartment and wheel wells. I am not a purist,so I have made a few modifications: Moved the battery to the trunk, added a coolant recovery tank, converted from a generator to an alternator, installed Hotronics Quik Flip Master Battery Disconnect, Radial whitewalls, Nardi steering wheel, Ramshead wool drvers seat cover, polished the valve cover, installed a drivers middle armrest and converted the distributor to a Pertronix module with their Hi voltage coil.

Piston marking

Checking with the build sheet confirms that I have the original engine. After removing the cylinder head to repair the defective exhaust valve, we cleaned the soot off of the piston heads and noticed the following stamped on each: "040.87" along with a Mahle symbol. Does anyone know what 040.87 means? Could it be an oversized piston? I had assumed that the 89,000 miles on the odometer was original, but after noting that there wasn't even the slightest hint of a ridge on the cylinder walls, I am beginning to suspect that the engine was rebored and that 89K may be 189K. Also I have noted that the new head gasket that I received only has copper on one side as opposed to copper on both sides surrounding the water jackets. Is this a modification to resolve a corrosion problem?

Gregg,
Checked my build sheet last night and contrary to what I thought, it doesn't have the option codes identified! It only translates what the German identifiers are on the front of the card. Sorry I could not be more help.
