Lightbulb Trip out on this- my tranny stuck in 2nd - If you turn the wheel it goes into 3rdWHY

Whew! This morning I took her for a drive and on this curvey road she went into 3rd for the first time ever!! Oh my God! It was sooooooo awesome. Never had I taken her this fast - She went over 60 mph while before I only went 30ish with high RPM's. What a dreamboat! Anyways so drove her around a bit and it went into 3rd if I put it all the way in first or 1 whatever - Grandma'd it then turned the wheel a bit (not sure which way) and pretty much every time she switched up!!!!!!!!!!! I am so determined to take her on the highway soon. Anyways my ? is ......is my tranny bad or not or does it just need some adjustment. Bushing or something..??? Look up my other threads - Ive had a hell of a time. Thanks

Check your engine and transmission mounts -- sounds like the drive train is moving around, causing the shift rod to work funny.

Also make sure the control rod from the throttle linkage to the transmission is attached and has the bushings in place on both ends -- if it is loose, it may not allow the tranny to upshift properly.

Lastly, check the kickdown swith and wiring to verify it is not stuck or shorted to voltage -- if the electric kickdown is stuck, but you open the circuit when you trun the wheel, it will hold the tranny in lower gear until you really wind it out.

Thumbs up Thanks

Thats what I originally told my Husband but of course I was wrong. I'll have it checked out and post a reply. Is there any way I can physically see if they are broke? Like pushing down on engine or side of the car for a spring like action?? I dont know what I would do w/o you guys......

Given the age, if there is no evidence of replacment, assume the engine mounts are pounded down to nothing, and the tranny mount is at least sagging if not broken. Do you also get some drumming under acceleration, centered beside the driver's seat? If so, tanny mount is separated.

As for a look-see, check the switch on the floor under the accelerator pedal. It must click when pressed down by the pedal, and release when you lift the pressure off. It's in a hole in the carpet, so it may must be full of crud and stuck.

The wire for the kickdown switch goes out under the car into the transmission on the passenger's side front.

Kickdown rod is on the passenger's side, I think.
