Questions about oil change
Hey all. Long time since I've posted. I've been driving my mercedes alot in the past few months, about 2500 miles in 3 months (more than I did all last year), and in about 500 miles I'd like to do an oil change. My mechanic is in Orange County and I live about 30 minutes south of there. I have never done an oil change on that car and I would like to finally do it. I do my 94' 325is on a regular basis and its a piece of cake. All I would like to know is what tools I may need. A friend of mine has a 78' 450SL and it needs a 17mm hex key (if I remember correctly) to remove the drain plug. Is my car the same, or do I use normal metric sockets? I also already purchased an oil filter for it, so besides the oil itself I'm ready to go. Thanks for the info.
-Kim

My '71 needs the hex key. Yours probably will too.
The oilfilter isn't exactly in a convenient location, but once you have crawled underneath there, you'll see what to do. Be careful not to overtighten the housing. Keep a couple of rags handy. Have fun! -Larry

Here's an idea..... take the original MB oil drain plug and hurl it into the woods - get yourself a "fumoto oil valve" instead....... http://www.fumotovalve.com/

Josh, the fumoto oil valve is terrific..... especially for diesels where oil is black and itsa horrible chore fishing the drain plug out of hot drained oil.
Bushes in my back yard are filled with old parts including radiator cowling, cruise control and entire vacuum locking system that I recently disarmed, plugging the vacuum lines with golf tees. |
