rectangular ones

Mark. Yes the small rectangular ones on the actual sides of the fenders, not the triangular ones in the light assembly are the ones I was referring to. So it seems that on US 108's when you indicated a turn you had a veritable Christmas tree lighting up in front and no foglamps? How unfortunate. I find the real Mercedes Fog lights that I had on my 108 back home to be most effective.

- Peter.

Hey Peter, after reading your comments re: US-spec turn signals, I had to run outside and check it out.
My '72 280SE 4.5 (owned for 3 days now) does not operate the side markers as auxiliary blinkers. Only my pseudo-fogs and the rears function with the lever or the hazard switch. The sides light only with the headlights or running lights on.
Further on the light topic, in studying my headlight assembly (and after reading another thread about European turn signals) I can see that inside the bogus clear lenses there are cast mounts which appear to have a die which could be knocked or cut out to mount small light fixtures in here and, in effect covert to European-style turn indicators by using a yellow bulb. This would be cool but is it so involved that the pay-off in coolness factor would be eradictaed by PITA factor/ Anybody done this? If I proceed, I would intentd to actually get some fogs/drivers to replace the current monster front indicator lights.
In the alternative, it might be spiffy to wire clear lights into each of this modules and have them function as running lights with the pseudo-fogs or with the headlights. I have yet to stick my head under the fender for this but the bezels seem to only have one accesible screw from the outside. Is this really all that is securing these huge chrom-o-ma-bobs?

kpb,
Yes, one screw at the bottom and then the bazel unclips at the top. I've never seen the sidemarkers flash on a W108 Mercedes but I haven't checked at alot of them for this feature. It's possible that a previous owner did some custom wiring on Peter's car.

My '60 220S has the turn/parking bulbs in one of the triangle lights on each headlight bezel. If you add real foglamps, you would need to convert yours or find lenses/sockets from a '59 to '61 Fintail.

Happy Motoring, Mark
