W108 Coming Home, Thanks Guys

Previously I started a thread about me finding a '67 280S, under the screen name of "79300CD". The thread was mostly about, the 280/250 head and fuel milage. After getting my family friend mechanic (MB Tech) to look at it he agreed the car was it great condition. The only thing he found was a engine mount that needs to be replaced. Upon his good news, I shook hands with the current owner to seal the deal. I'll take delivery within the next couple of days. I'll post pictures, as soon as I can. Thanks again to all the people who replied to my previous thread.

Right Mirror?

The one i'm buying doesn't have a right mirror, nor do I see how I would install one if I had one. Are there w108's out their with the right mirror?

Right side mirrors are out there, but they are hard to find. Once and a while you'll stumble acros a NOS RH mirror, if you happen to, I would suggest jumping on it ASAP no matter the cost.

Just another 108 in search of a RH mirror.

I bought one for my 109 and in my opinion, they do not work very well. The field of vision is pretty limited. I guess they help balance the car visually though.

Some Simple Questions

I have a few questions...

What bulbs (wattage) do you guys use in the tail lights of your W108's?

How do you work the temp controls? My car has 4 horizontal levers above he radio, and two nubs below. I can probably figure out the numbs since their labeled, but I'm not sure about the horizontal levers.

How do you open up the gas cap with the key? I turn and turn ever which way, but nothing happens.

Sorry for all these questions which are probably so elementary to you. But I don't have manuel and the previous owner spoke poor english.

Mike

Good illustration of mirror positioning can be seen in the Scrapyard thread..... maybe mount a decent looking aftermarket product forward on the fender where you can see it through the windshield....... get somebody to hold it in place before you buy it, so you can test it.

Positive upgrade from the 123 coupe to the 108, eh? Am wondering if the 108 is the best represented car on this forum, also the model that racks up the most miles (collectively) as most popular dailly driver of vintage MB.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your new find!!!! I have no left mirrow on my 109, but would like to replace with larger mirrows anyhow, just don't know what to go to yet. Hate to punch holes where they don't belong.

On the ends of the chrome panel, at each of the 4 slides should be some little colored symbols. The 2 red ones work the left and right side heater valves. The black or blue one with the nub pointing up, opens the defrost flap, the one with the nub pointing down opens the heat flap. It's not unusual for the cables/heater valves to stick, so don't force the controls.

Try holding the gas cap still while you turn the key.

Mine's not a W108 so I hope this helps. The tail-light sockets on my '72 250 are marked with the wattage. Stop and turn-signal bulbs 21 watts, back-up lamps 15 watts, parking lamps 5 watts.
I think the stop and turn-signal bulb is equivalent to an 1156 bulb and the parking lamp is a 97. I'm not sure about the back-up.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Some Problems

Okay, I started driving the car around today. I noticed that when I would stop, and park the car, alot of coolant would leak out of over-flow rubber pipe. This happened about twice, and on the second time nothing came out. I dismissed it thinking the previous owner put in too much coolant and that the excess had by now spilled out. The next time I parked the car I noticed once again a large puddle of coolant, and lines of coolant on the ground that were caused before I parked the car. While driving I havn't noticed any spilage, and my engine temp doesn't go over 200F. What could be the problem? Should I have an over flow tank for the over-flow coolant?

Whats the radiator level, after it cools down? There should be a tab or nub about halfway down the inside of the radiator filler hole. The coolant level should be at or near that when cold.

If it's not overfilled or overheating, I'd suspect a faulty radiator cap.

the coolant level currently barely covers the tops of the columbs inside the radiator. After driving it at that level, only a few ''over flow'' drops escaped the radiator. but the temp stayed around 190
