Tail Fins

Yeah, gotta love those tail fins - I'm sure they make the car go faster! Yes Mark, the A/C does work. It had a new compressor installed a few years ago and only needed a recharge for it to blow cold. Can't live without A/C here in Florida.

Many years ago, I put together an AC unit for my '61 180b out of salvaged parts, including a hang-on dash unit out of a 220S. Used to make my co-workers jealous - driving such an old car with cold AC when their much newer cars didn't have it or theirs didn't work.
It's that same unit I'm now planning to install in my 220S.

Catrinus,
That 200 would be slow if compared to 200 HP modern econoboxes, but a hot-rod compared to the Diesel version. Try it and see what you think. With a stickshift and 95HP DIN/105HP SAE, 0 to 60 acceleration should be about 15 sec., about the same as my 4 speed 115HP 220S, which has a slightly larger, heavier body. I consider my 220S performance more than adequate.
(But then, I don't own any 200 HP econoboxes)
Happy Motoring, Mark

Congratulations. Very nice car. My father used to have a white 230S, 1967 with red interior. It was the family car. I grew up with that car. We were all very sad when my father sold it 20 years later, because it was almost a member of our family.
Enjoy your car !!

Looks like you have a nice little project if you were to paint those Air cleaner parts.

By the way, what is your oil pressure at idle? Be sure and check out Munich Taxi's post in this forum "Need help with oil filter sealing ring". There are a couple of small rubber rings that are essential to oil circulation through the filter, without them, it may be bypassed. I just found out that I might have been running under these conditions for some time.

Check with the techs if there is any doubt.

Ahh, a black 220S - the ultimate early-60s German gangster car! If you get a chance, check out the bad guys in the black fintail, chasing James Bond in the 1969 film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'
To really be on the cutting edge of yesterday's technology, you need a manual choke and column-shift, all-drum brakes and a tube radio. ( My '60 also has Euro headlamps, but I wish it had your front discs.)

Happy Motoring, Mark

I'll have to see if I can ID the one chasing Bond. I do have a couple of 1962 'The Saint' episodes with the bad guys in 220 Fintails. And a couple of gangsters steal a white 220S Fintail in Spain, for a getaway car in the 1984 British film "The Hit'. (Took me awhile to ID that one)
The 300SE was relatively rare back then. I remember seeing one in the 1962 Italian film 'Boccacio 70', but as a limo for a church official, not a gangster.

Hapy Motoring, Mark

I remember seeing a RHD W112 swb 300SE in a Godzilla movie. The car was up on a mountain someplace in Japan. (I know it was a 300SE because of the C-pillar cover.)
