Mercedes owner kindness

The owner/driver of a 300D (84) told me "Nice car" Wondering if this is a common occurance - this is really the first time I'm using this car It made me feel good!

Thumbs up

You'll get more of it- nice thing about the 108 is that it looks old enough that people don't think you're flashy-

Yeah.. I've had alot of people ask me about my car or comment on how they like it. So far I haven't actually done this but anytime I see an older mercede sowner stopped on the side of the road with the hood up I am compelled to pull over and try to help them. I would definatley pull over to help if they were outside the city.. I basically carry my entire tool collecition the trunk of the car so I think I could help in most cases.

Myself, I've noticed a HUGE difference between "vintage" MB owners and "New" MB owners. I've found the vintage owners (and fans) to be extremely kind, supportive and friendly. Sad to say, the people buying the new ones don't seem to have any of those qualities. I'm sure there are exceptions (e.g. lots of vintage owners also seem to own newer ones), but this is my sweeping generalization.

I heard this joke once about BMW drivers, but I think it applies to new MB owners as well:
Q: What's the difference between a camel and a BMW?
A: The camel has its ass hole on the outside.

Just my tuppence.

Maybe the newer car owners dont react to recognition because their cars are tougher to identify, so they arent used to it. You've gotta be standing next to one to know its an MB. The 300D fellow probably spotted your 108 at a distance.

Was in the fast lane on 2 lane parkway the other day, chugging along at 75 in my 240D. Motorcycle gang came up behind me, so i pulled into slower lane and waved them past - sticking my arm out the window.

These guys looked like guerrillas stretched out on Harley Davidsons, wearing club colors and carrying a couple of babes on the back of their bikes. The biker in front nodded his head at me for letting them pass. This made me feel kinda cool.

I've had numerous people admire 'Miss Daisy' my '60 220S, with her faded paint and rusty bumpers. (Or maybe they're just awe-struck that she's still runnning and driving!)

Happy Motoring, Mark

Funny thing is that my other car is a Miata and they are amazing. The first series Miata has the pop up headlights and the cars "Wave" to each other by poping up the headlights. I have found the Mercedes drivers locally so interested in themselves I even was next to one that was the exact same color, and in similar shape as mine. He had a US version and I could not get his attention at all. I tried to wave, smile or anything. I have seen a few older MB owners that do seem friendly but around here that seems to be the exception. By the way 280 4.5 is an awsome car I donated mine and have regretted it since. I think I will never sell a car. Guess I have to start looking for a bigger garage. I looked at an historic Fire house to move into. I think I could fit at least 6 or 8 cars in it. To bad it is such a bad neighborhood.

Around here most of the folks who drive a vintage MB acknowledge each other, whether on the road or meeting in a parking lot. Have had some younger kids, late highschool maybe, comment at a stop light on the 4.5 - in a positive way .

All too often I find myself walking up to other MB owners/drivers at the filling station (usually with a cup of coffee in hand) and striking up a conversation. Been running a little over 50% on acceptance of a total stranger wanting to talk about cars, and everyone I do talk with I refer to this site. How many have joined I don't know.

Once in a blue moon you'll find a true enthusiast in a new model, latest was in a S55. Turns out he's had many MBs over the years.

I see the occasional fellow 107 out there, but remarkably little happens by way of wave/light flash/etc. around my usual haunts in Grand Rapids. But then, we're not normally very demonstrative around here--larger than Lake Wobegon but not unlike the mindset!
