PCV valve: M117 engine ('77 450 SEL)

Still checking for source of my loss of pwoer on acceleration.

It pays for me to check out PCV valve.

Questions:

1. Exactly, where is it?

2. If totally clogged, what would be effect on performance?

3. How cheap to replace it?

4. What are usual causes for clog?

Note: Hesitation/fluttering/loss of pwoer on any acceleration has grown worse since I changed oil, last week. Could be coincidence, maybe not. Live in Florida. Hot. Changed to 20W-50.

Further note: Although my temp guage is holding at a little above 80C, my engine compartment is somewhat hotter - even after short trip with no sun in evening. Most additional heat (hot hood) seems eminating frim left side. That's the side where I suspect bad/clogged cat. Could be that exhaust is buidling up due to bad PCV or exhaust.

Buildup of ehaust/backup indicates clog somewhere, no?

I DOUBT that a bad PCV valve would cause that. Oil of 20w50 seems very thick, even if it does get "hot." I'd put no heavier than 10w40 in it if I were you! The PCV valve is near the idle speed screw - there is a tube on the left valve cover (that comes from the flame arrester) and goes to the PCV. Clean the flame arrester out on BOTH sides (gas works well). Soak the PCV in gas too if it seems dirty.

No PCV valve on the M117, the gas from the crankcase goes though the idle valve instead. Can't be plugged, or you would have no idle warm.

If clogged, you will have lots of oil on the clean side of the air filter where the supply hose to the passenger side valve cover is attached.
