Newbie with 78 450 SLC

Hi everyone.
My father and I recently purchased a 78 460 SLC in good shape. Neither one of us is very familiar with Mercedes (between the 2 of us we've had our share of older BMWs). Anything we should look out for with this car? Are there any repair/maintenance manuals? What are the best ones? Anything you can tell a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Sari

Welcome to the Vintage Forum!

The main issues with the 450SL's seem to be troubles with fuel system, mainly fuel and vacuum hoses and gaskets that dry out and leak, injectors that lose their spray pattern; hard starting when warm due to vapor lock or injector leakage; and of course the infamous climate control system with its servo motor, amplifier, and maze of vacuum controls.

One last area is the timing chain and cam oiling. If you have any sort of a rattle at start-up, consider replacing the tensioner. Have the valve timing checked for chain stretch, and replace the plastic connectors on the cam oil tubes.

I am sure others will weigh in, and there is an active SL forum as well.

How about a picture?

Use a digital camera, and move the picture to your PC's hard drive.

You need to get them down to about 50KB in size by using the low resolution setting on your camera, or by cropping or resizing them with a picture editor like Paint.

Then when you post a new topic or reply, hit the Browse button next to "Attach File," locate the file, and hit the Submit button.
