There was a European coachworks which did a few such conversions (at least hundreds)

in the '60s and '70s -- Perhaps the work done in Chicago was just a grey-market federalizing.

My guess is the conversion is American on account of US spec. temp guage and oil guage.... also the ID plaques on door post do not appear on grey market cars. Maloney and Picasso are couple of American companies that do custom work, mostly stretch limos...... i wonder who built that 116.

Its rare to see conversions that do justice to original body. The best wagons i think were built by Belgian company that did heckflosse conversions from '67-68, producing fewer than 2,000 wagons known as 'universals' built on 110 & 111 coachwork. (7th pic down on this photo album - http://www.heckflosse.nl/photo.htm )

116 Wagon

That Car on ebay is a "Crayford" conversion.Converted by Crayford Auto Developement Ltd. Kent England. They were supposedly high quality conversions. Also the car is a US model,so they must have done some for the US market.

That ties in with the "estate" badge on the rear hatch. It would be a "station wagon" if the conversion was from a US company. The pictures also tie in with historic b&w photos from that company.
