25 amp fuse 280se 4.5
I noticed that I have a missing fuse in the fuse box. It went to the heater; it's a small 25 amp, half the size of the 8amp white fuse were do you get a small fuse like this.

I don't know where to find that shorty fuse now a days. When mine blew the local indy was kind enough to give me one from his "used" fuse stash. Worked great ever since. Might try a euro only parts house, or possibly one that specializes in VW, anyplace else only seems to have the full length ones. One other option would be to wire in a supplimental fuse, like the fuse upgrade for the 126's. I might just do that should mine blow again.

If you still have the old fuse, you can make a TEMPORARY new one by using aluminum foil on it. It'll not have the right amperage (either be WAY too large or WAY too small), but it'll work for now. But DO NOT DO IT if there is a short elsewhere in the system... it might cause a small fire!

Bump....
Have the same problem myself. The copper "collar" or "spacer" on the heater blower fuse looks like it might be removeable. Picked up a nice set of "German Fuses" from the old trusty, (well more like brand new and not musty, yet) Wal-Mart Supercenter. Right kind of fuses, but not short enough :-\ Has anyone removed that copper spacer? What's the best way to do so? Is there a better alternative? I think my '66 250SE was gutted and replaced with the glass fuses, but it's been a few years since I've had it. |

Inline blade fuse holders are available from Radio Shack and other sources.

hey bradley, I did this about one month ago since my search for the shorty fuse was fruitless. I used a small curved needlenose and kept pinching the fixating end of the insert until it was mangled enough to let the insert pop out. It took longer than expected because the insert is a solid chunk of copper! Not enough room in there to drill it out... |

Hi guys,
reckon from what i see on this thread i had similar fuse blow on my W114, tho' it was for the windscreen wipers/washers. of course it had to blow at night, on a cross country run, when raining.not funny. i did as Tomguy mentioned with the silver foil from a gum packet and that got me going again. im not sure if its feasible for you guys, but i have sourced a lot of parts from www.dbdepot.de , german site run by friendly guy called Andreas. he has good english, reasonable prices. he threw in a couple of blister packs of fuses including this 'shorty' fuse with the copper (not brass?) spacer. i had tried in vain to source this fuse elsewhere. a word on the dbdepot site- homepage gives you the option of german or english. the english pages are limited, german pages much more comprehensive, but worth checking out. cheers, tony

I'll check out the website. Wbain's idea might fly too. Really though, I am of the sentiment to modify it to allow me to find replacement parts on the road if needed. What does that fuse do anyhow? Basically in the interim, we have been taking it off of the wiper/horn circuit and replacing it when it rains. Although, I personally prefer driving the F-250 when it's raining...Not that the Benz lacks handling, I'm more concerned about the other idiots in Northern California (present forum members excluded) that don't know how to drive...
Thanks for the advice! |

You can use AGA 25 fuses. These are the glass kind, but they work just fine. I was not able to get mine locally and so had to use Mouser.com. They have them for $0.74 each. You might think that the glass fuses will fall out, at least I did. They don't. We have the same car (1973 280SE 4.5), so I should be right about your situation.
