You've already got a dual exhaust with common mufflers (crossovers). Unless you want to play around quite a while, I suspect you are going to find the MB did a very good job of desiging the sytem, and it will take several tries to get similar performance, to say nothing of where you are going to put the mufflers on the driver's side.....

Good luck!

Peter

Well, it depends on what type of 108 he has. I see in my parts manual that there is indeed a pic of a single-pipe setup (P142 in Catalog B, 1971, for those of you interested in seeing yourself). If that's from a 250S or something, you might be better off getting a new echaust manifold and back from a 280 with dual pipes. Same routing and mounting, I believe. Major upgrade!

Exhaust

My Muffler "provider" (Ed at Ed Hanson's Muffler Service, San Diego) tells me that a single 3" flows more efficiently than dual 2", due to less surface area inside the tube(s).

In your case, I would suggest a 2 1/4 system from just after the manifold head pipes into an oval single in/out "Ultra-Flo" in place of your front silencer, then into a round ultra-flo in place of the rear silencer. If you wanted to maintain a stock appearance, put on a dual tip with the roll tips, and enjoy the benifits of high flow and smooth tones.

see attached:

http://www.a-1performance.com/ultra_flo/

I had a dual 2.25 system with the "big block" ultra-flo's on my 91 Crown Vic (I Know, I Know!!) and was very pleased. It had a very quiet mellow tone at idle, and on acceleration, and nearly silent at hwy speeds. This was with cats, so your car with dual in-line mufflers should be equivalent.

Ed claims an 8 year life span with 13ga aluminized tubing and longer for the mufflers, as they are stainless.

Happy Motoring
