Finally bought the '72 280sel 4.5

After all the phone calls, having it taken to a mech, and flying out to CA......actually bought the thing. It hasn't been driven in two years and the gas is getting sour. I am having a transporter pick it up and deliver it to Tucson instead of driving though as it has enough issues that I didn't want to spend a bunch having the mech fix things I can do myself once it arrivers.

In overview, the present family has had it since' 80 and I have all the records going back to that time. Needs a new grille, rear brake caliper and roter, drivers side exhast manifold has a leak, front tires are worn, bad battery, one cylinder is missing.

Good history.....timing chain tensior replaced, new paint ($4000.00 in '95), reqular major tune ups, oil change reciepts 3" thick, radiators and hoses changed a couple of times. I am still plowing through the package but it looks well taken care of.

Yep, sunroof that even works. If fact everything seems to work, even the clock. Ahhhh, take that back....the becker radio doesnt work but it may be that the PO disconnected the speaker sand hooked them to an aftermarket radio thta is installed under the glove box.

How about AC? That's probably a must in Tuscon.

AC and heater controls all seem to work fine although one of the heater levers is a bit stiff.

Thumbs up Congrats on the 4.5!

Congrats. You're going to love it. I've had one in beige (tan?) for about 4 years now and I still get people asking be about it at red lights, etc.; It's just a fun car to drive and there are a lot of things I love about it, so I hope you enjoy your as much as I've enjoyed mine (even w/ all the radiator repairs, but that's a different story . . .)

Good for you, I now have 48,500 miles on my 300SEL, just talked to my tech and he told me that the manifold gaskets have deteroiated and need to be replaced. These are old cars and always need something. Glad to hear you can work on yours wish I could. Enyoy, they are great cars!!

If you mean the plenum gaskets - these are pretty easy to do, I did them myself, just make sure to buy the gaskets that connect the manifold to the heads as well (1 per side) because they're paper and they will tear and need to be replaced. Don't do it with the engine hot, and open the rad cap. drain some coolant out, so that it doesnt leak out of the coolant slots when you do it.
