Backup lights

I was recently informed to a burned out tailight on my right, and a dim one on my left. Not one to take chances, I checked every bulb in my system (other than the brake lights - no 2nd person). My backup lights aren't coming on - but the bulbs are fine. Where is the switch/sensor located for these bulbs? (Somewhere in the linkage I assume) - haven't crawled under her yet. Knowing in advance would be easier.

Tom, re: assessing brake lights.

That's what plate glass windows on commercial buildings are for. One three-point turn at dusk while looking in the rear view will tell the tale.

You should do a search on the archives found on www.mbz.org

Floor shift or column?

Could be the neutral safety switch, could be linkage bushings, could be shift tube bushings (for column shift). Try moving the shifter a little more toward Park, see if those back-up lights come on stronger.

It's a column shift. I had it running and in reverse (with the brake on) and they weren't lit. I will have to have someone look at them while I fiddle with the shifter, although it didnt seem to help when I tried by myself.
Would it be the neutral safety switch even if it works properly? (starts in P or N but not R, D, S, or L).

Two different circuits but same switch. It's on the driver's side of the transmission.
Kind of a pain to replace - room is tight in the tunnel. The shift lever on the trans shifter shaft has to come off - clamp-bolt and nut on the lever and a little bolt in a slot connecting it to a bronze switch drive bushing, The little bronze bushing is sometimes cracked or broken and one or more of the three screws that mount the switch to the trans might be corroded and seized in place. When it's back together you need to adjust the little bolt in a slot so that reverse lights and neutral safety functions work properly. Have fun!

Happy Motoring, Mark
