Well, England perhaps, but doesn't Ireland, Greenland, Iceland, Austrailia, and Africa have RHD too? I know Der Vaterland has LHD like the US, and MOST of continental Europe does too...

Not to mention that wagon looks like a "Rust bucket." I wonder what's under that thing in the rear cargo area? Probably HOLES!

I was interested in that vehicle as a restoration project, plus, I'm a sucker for the finnies, so to have a finnie wagon was too good to believe. So, I called the guy after e-mailing him and basically, it was more than I was willing to gamble. Short story is that he wants $4,000 for it, even though it has been in storage near salt water for the past 11 years and was put away wet so to speak - no engine or body prep whatsoever. He said he bought it in 1980 from the guy who imported it from England and then he drove it for twelve years or so here in CT. One day he drove it into his garage, turned it off and never looked back until recently. He tired to sell it a year ago and didn't get his price, so he's trying again, but he sounded firm, and said he'd just keep it longer if it didn't sell. He was very honest though as he stressed it was a restoration project and could not be driven away with a new battery and gas, but would need to be trailered.
Now from what I've heard on this board, and from my own 220SEb, I know the engines are very durable, but with everything else that would need to be replaced, and then no real value to it except to maybe some other eccentric like me, (but with lots of money), I think I'll try to find myself a sound bodied 230SL 4-speed to tinker with instead.

Fintail Fan..... its the same old story - car is "too precious" to ever be bought, sold or put on the road where it belongs. Meanwhile it decays and dies slow death actually losing value as it fades into obscurity and market appeal becomes increasingly narrower and narrower.

When these amazingly wonderful cars get stashed away never to be driven again, it reminds me of the old saying: "An axe is only an axe when it is chopping wood."

Thumbs up

Hey there. Here's a belated response....
I have checked out the Fintail website that '240DieselDog' posted for us. It's nice to see. That's the only fintail site I've seen out there. Anyone seen others?

Oh, also reguarding the 190Dc engine, it is a fine engine I have used it. Although I have gone with the 200D engine as an update. They put it in the 110 chassis fintails like the Dc's. The specs differ in that the 200D's have 5 Main bearings instead of only 3. I love my fintail!

Actually, it's not just any old saying, it's Aristotle

who says "An axe isn't an axe unless it's cutting" in his metaphysical discussions on final causality (purpose) as part of the essences of things.

But Ferry Porsche is rumored to have quoted it, too, and in a similar context.

PICTURES!!!

Ok ok I see alot of people actually responded to my post I have been plenty busy with my others cars, and life....

Here are some pictures from before the car went into the garage....notice the rust on the driver side drip rail...

There are also another set of rear side doors inside...and there is a different bumper on it now because IIRC its flawless..thats what caught my eye the first time i saw it.

I was talking with a friend of mine whos got a sedan finback and he says he bought his running for $500 but at this point I just want it to go to a good home and not be cut up and just used to for parts......and if just as a side note for shipping I may be able to work something out with you with a moving truck...if it ends up cheaper than shipping.....

If anyone is interested please email me directly:

or call me (503)639-5763

Thanks so much for all the input!

Here's the update on this amazing old finbody..... one of fewer than maybe 2,000 MB universals that were built.

Heather tells me she's got somebody lookin at the car this weekend, offering $700. Hell, I'd be all over it like a bum on baloney sandwich - if it was closer to me. Was hopin to bag it myself as daily driver / project car for under $1G including shippping, but just dont see it happening.

Have updated this thread just in case anybody wants to jump on this uncommon opportunity..... time is short, all contact info is in this thread.

For starters, a 50s or 60s wagon, even a parts wagon is worth a lot more than 700$. Also, the things that are "wagonish" are no longer replacable. For instance, tail lights. Spares just no longer exist.

Bob Gunthorp in Chula Vista (already mentioned here) and John Green out in Australia (http://www.mb-spares.com.au) are the two guys I know with the most expertise on these cars.

As for your plans for bio-diesel, go for it. There are plenty of folks that have run their benzs with french fry cooking grease. I would suggest a visit to www.mbz.org and look up the diesel mailing list. It's yet another source like this place.

Replace your motor with a good used one. Just about any benz 4 cylinder deisel is a good candidate. However, don't loose the original one. It's too unique a car for that.
