I believe those are vents to vent the inside cabin air to the outside, providing flow through the cabin. If you check the lower edge of the rear window, you will find the vent panel is concealed under the puffy piece at the bottom.

Not sure how it works. It is either the building pressure inside the cabin pushes through the vent or a venturi created as the car moves along pulls the air through the vent. My money is on the former.

It's an exhaust vent -- pulls air out of the car from the base of the rear window and lets it out around the trunk lid at the front edge. This means you need to remove snow or ice from the front egde of the trunk lid to get good airflow down the rear window.

Germany tends to be very damp in the winter, and I believe that the excellent ventilation provided in MB's is a result of that -- terrible condensation and fogging if you don't move LOTS of air. Plays merry hell with the AC if you don't have good door gaskets and window channels, though....
