Well David, I still have a feeling it'd fit inside the oil pan's hole for the oil drain plug, thus solving the molasses-for-lube problem

Tom, where can the oil/sump heatar be found?? Am thinkin magnetize the heat element to collect microcosmic metal particles and it would be one helluva thing to have - assuming threads of the heat plug match the MB sump...... and somehow the heat element can be magnetized, i dunno how.

Peter, do you have any idea if 240D engine from 1979 will fit that 115 you've been building campfires underneath?? Itsa fact that rear axles are interchangeable between w123 and w115, so maybe the driveshaft and tranny will also swap if necessary.

The '79 has earlier loop glow plugs and modern vertical-lift oil cannister filter..... Its the cannister filter colliding with steerage that makes the engine impossible to fit the 110 Heckflossen in addition to bellhousing and driveshaft discrepancies and motor mount arms that have gotta be fabricated.

In spite of having an incredibly low mileage, fast and perfectly maintained engine, am not entirely happy with my severely rusted w123 thats got sloppy handling characteristics.

Deffinitely, keep us posted on the no-start 115 4-spd car w/sunroof you've got stashed away in the bushes......... Btw, rumor on this msg.brd is we've got friend in Oz who knows about 5-spd tranny for the 114/115 that could be shipped stateside for somewhere around $1G less negotiable swap value of complete 114 Coupe electric window system thats virtually unheard of downunder at Oz.

I doubt the heating element can be magnetized (HIGHLY)! The heater I got that pic for was from FastLane, for a '72 280SE 4.5, under Accessory.

Thanks Tom, glad to know where i can get one.

But how is metal made magnetic...... does it take electrical process or what?? That horseshoe heat element being insolated from drain plug makes me think it could be made into excellent magnet - even if its gotta be shipped somewhere to 'magnet maker' for the process.

Otherwise, the only magnetic oil drain plug I've ever seen was standard equipment on 1967 BMW R69S motorcycle.

Dog: If you want something, put a neodynum magnet on your current drain plug (you might want to epoxy it on, not so it sticks to the plug but so it doesn't stick to the pan!) These VERY POWERFUL magnets will yank any debris to them. One the size of a cork would be a HELL of a lot stronger than a standard ferrous magnet - so strong you probably couldn't yank it off the drain plug without a LOT of force!

No, the 616 engine will NOT fit in a W115 chassis. Otherwise, I would have gotten an newly rebuilt but not picked up 240 in there -- sat on the garage floor at a friends shop for about 6 years.

Oil filter housing fits in the same place as the front suspension -- same problem as the Heckflosse.

Nice thought though!

Peter

Peter: Thats when you become a "Plumber" and modify it to MAKE it fit! Surely you can somehow make the filter "remote" hell even put it in a REAL easy-to-access place! I would've tried my damndest, at least!

BIG PITA, Tom -- oil filter housings are different, it contains the bypass and the thermostat for the oil cooler, etc.

I figure it's cheaper and eaiser to rebuild the 615 if I decide to keep the car than to figure out how to stuff a 616 in there.

Now, a 617 on the other hand.....

Peter
