Turn signal flasher module
My original turn signal module's flash interval is extremely slow, almost 4 seconds between flashes. I feel it is a safety issue now as other drivers attention is not attracted to that slow an interval. Is this the standard time sequence for my old 1963 220SEB model 111? If it is, has anyone modified their car to accept an standard auto parts flasher module that flashes a little more rapid? I got a replacement quote from the MBZ dealer of $64 (gasp!) as compared to a universal unit at the auto parts store for $10. A MBZ replacement would be a waste of money if it has the same time sequence. Can the old one be adjusted to flash faster? I took the mechanism out of the container and couldn't determine an adjustment point. See attachment.

Hey, at least you can still get one from the dealer. Try that with any other 40 year old car.
The TS flasher on my '60 Fintail 220S is fairly slow at about 1 second. I think it's an OE replacement by the previous owner. 4 seconds is excessive. There isn't any normal adjustment provided because the flashers aren't meant to be opened up. Now that you've opened yours, you might be able to adjust it by gently bending one of the contacts. Have you tried to find an OE aftemarket replacement? Most of the round US type flashers used in the past 30 years are the 2 pin type, either # 224 or # 323. There used to be a heavy duty 3 pin US-made Tung-Sol flasher that could be used if you modified the terminals. I think the part # was 550 or 552. Happy Motoring, Mark

My one was replaced by the previous owner with an after market one. It's giganticly out of place, but I can live with it

There is a tiny little wire that gets hot with every flicker and there is a holder that gives it a tension (like the neck of a guitar). By bending the holder one can change the tension of the wire and thus adjust the flicker rate. If I remember clearly, more tension = quicker flicker.
*********************** Compare the same thermo-switch from old FIAT or OPEL and actualy from any Euro car of similar year of manufacture. You may find pin-to-pin compatable sparepart. |
