Floor Pan Replacement/Repair
Has anyone here replaced or patched a floor pan that had rust on it?
I need some advice. New pans are available for $125. My mechanic offered to cut out the necessary section from a junked car in his yard. Any idea what the best plan of attack is? should i go ahead and have the whole thing replaced? or just patched? Also, who should I look to for the work to be done? thanks

A whole floor pan is probably the way to go -- on the W123 the floor rusts through around the seat anchors at the rear of the front seat. Water ends up there it appears.
A whole floor pan will require stripping the interior out, but will give you a much better repair than welding in patches, probably less time, too. We did the pans in my brother's W115 300D by patching, I think if I decide to restore the 220D I will buy floor pans, it will be faster and cheaper. Peter

the first thing you want to do is stop all the cancer from going any further, then get some metal treatment for it.after that you'll be able to see just how big a repair you have,if your car is apart or you have the time and welder to replace the whole pan then thats the way to go,however patching small areas is ok as well.the last one i did was a patch job,i just cleaned everything i could put some navel jelly on it then with my grinder i cleaned the area and then added about another inch or so to make sure i got all the rust.after you replace the pan or just patch make sure you test the area for leaking, use a good sealer on both sides.try the eastwood company for sealers and paint(on line only)but thats the place to get the best stuff for any job on any car when it comes to restoring and taking care of the body and parts.
hope this helps, p.s. be very carefull to watch out for cables, fuel lines ,wires, etc, when welding other than that it's an easy job. |
