Smile Running Rich is Fun

After all the warnings by members of this forum regarding the air temp sensor.....I accidently left the sensor unplugged yesterday. I was in a hurry to get to the drugstore and slapped the air cleaner back on, closed hood and fired her up. Thought is was a odd that it seemed to be idling a bit rough and sending out a bit of black smoke, but what the hell, I was only going to the store.

Big surprise, that 4.5 never had so much power....really a kick from the stop sign. It wasn't 'til I got home and it was still a bit rough that I looked under the hood and saw that connector loose. Plugged it back in a everything went back to normal.

I am actually thinking about installing a switch on the leads.. Maybe wiring it to the kick down switch. Also thinking about putting a spring extension on the kickdown so it engages a bit sooner then "petal to the metal"

Someone had said that running rich would "burn the tires off", well that wasn't far from the truth.

Well, that's because you're so lean to begin with! When you run as rich as mine does - leaving that wire off means a LOT of smoke and hesitation on the highway!
Although since I leaned it out, last time I forgot it off, I did blow away the Mustang behind me... then again, he might have choked on my smoke!

Get her up and flying, then richen the mixture a bit. Don't go overboard, or you milage will drop to the 10-12 mpg level.

You already have an "accelerator pump" feature on the EFI, and full throttle enrichment (floor it sometime at night in traffic -- you will see a puff of smoke as the EFI dumps the fuel to it). This is the source of that wondeful throttle repsonse the D-Jet has. Also the source of the fuel greed and excessive pollution -- if you run very rich, they STINK terribly!
