'72 280SE 4.5 -- listing to port
After the successful week-end flex disc and tranny mount adventure I have been using my blue beast as a run-around car when my car-crazy twelve-year-old asks, "Dad, why does the car lean to the left?" "Excellent question" says me, "lets throw it to the experts on the Vintage Forum, they sure walked me through the flex disc and tranny mount!"
So, what say ye? I have the spring compensator and I have a distinct creak from the rear area when changing the pitch of the car, mostly on initial acceleration from a stop. I cannot replicate the creak while I am outside the car and I was thinking it was a rubber groan but now I dunno. Could my list to port and my ghostly noise be connected. I doubt the subframe mounts have ever been replaced, could this cause the car to list a bit? It is most obvious from the rear view. Ideas most appreciated. |

Sagging spring, no grease in the diff bushings (very likely), bent shock. All will make noise except possibly the spring.
If the front subframe mounts are bad, the front will droop some (and inch or so) and the car will wander badly, expecially when braking hard. Get a good grease gun and some synthetic grease and hit all the grease points -- 14 up front, thee in the back: Kingpin, upper trunion, and lower trunion, plus the ends of the control arms up front, two on the pivot for the rear end (have to jack the car up and let the rear wheels hang to get one of them), one on the u-joint at the rear (not always present). Have fun! Peter
