Hello,
W116 450SEL(euro spec) 12-14mpg
W115 200(euro spec) 20-26mpg
Not exactly something to shout about with the W201 190E 1.8s that are running around here at 28-34mpg and the little A160s managing almost 40mpg, but then again, no A160 has ever been able to outrun even the 200 and none of the modern high geared cars stand a chance on a hilly road.
Have a good weekend.

nachi,
I'd be happy with a gas W115 that could get 20 to 26 MPG. Is your 200 a stick-shift?
Recently, a local shop here had a 1985 Euro W123 230E for sale. It had the newer style 4 cylinder crossflow engine like in the 190E. I would have been interested if it had been equipped with a 5 speed instead of an automatic.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Hello Mark,
There are a number of reasons for the W115's 20-26mpg. And yes, it is a stick shift with a factory quoted output of 95bhp at 5000rpm.
1. The choke has been disabled. With ambient temps in the 90s year round, a choke is a waste of fuel around here. It runs rough for the first half-mile or so after a cold start, but the rest of the day it is OK.
2. The traffic speeds here rarely exceed 50 mph, mostly it crawls along at 30-40mph, with the 200's low gearing, I can run along in top gear at these speeds.
3. I always run the *high speed-full load* tyre pressures, so that must help reduce rolling resistance!
4. My *driving style* has always been to gently squeeze the accelerator, not push it the floor, and the 200 can still keep up with *faster*(80-90mph) traffic, but then it does about 20mpg at best because the engine is revving close to 5000rpm.

The W116 450SEL is not taxed or insured, but the few times I did have it out, it easily disposed of supposedly much faster or more powerful cars, one in particular is the Mitsubishi crossover SUV, called the Airtrek(200bhp turbo I-4 5 speed auto) here, I remember seeing it on sale in the US last year but cannot remember the name over there, the thing drew alogside just as I pressed to WOT in the 450 and it was reduced to a speck in the rear view mirror in a few seconds! The driver tried very hard to catch up, but to no avail.
Have a good year ahead and keep the old autobahn cruisers running.

Mark,
The W123 230E was and still is very common here, mostly automatics, the 5 speeder has a reputation as a troublesome box of cogs. Even the german magazine AMS long term test car had to have it's 5 speeder replaced at around 50k miles.
The 230E auto averages around 20-22mpg, not much better than a W115 230/4.
Have a good week.

At best my '60 220S averages about the same MPG as my '72 automatic 220 used to but the older 6 cylinder is so much smoother. Even though my 220S is a bigger car than my 250, the 220S gets marginally better gas mileage. Without AC, automatic or power steering, my 220S is actually about 300 pounds lighter than my 250. For now, my 84 Honda Accord gets up to 35 MPG. I guess if I really want great fuel mileage in a Mercedes, I'll need to find a stick-shift 240D or maybe a 5 speed 190D.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I usually get anywhere from 16.5-18.5mpg. It is alot of freeway miles, but I feel that since I drive fast on the streets, it balances itself out. :p

Are you saying that you like or do not like the whitewalls?
Thanks

I like them also. My friend does not like them for some reason. I think that they add a nice vintage look to the car.

I like the whitewalls with your two-tone exterior. It gives the car a subtle 'kustom' look without going overboard and spilling the beans.

My dual Zenith carburated 280s('s) do about 13mpg but that's mostly because of my very heavy foot! I just love it when doing say 70mph and then you "punch it", jumps right to 90 in about no time flat!

Tim, I love the thin white look also but I did away with it on mine. They seem to be quite a pain to keep clean, IMHO!

BTW, fine looking ride you have there!
