Controlled by a keyboard! (For now - too lazy/don't care enough to run out and blow ~$20 on a keypad)

Other than the Mp3 playback, are there any other uses for the computer? When I was younger, I wanted to be able to type in start and have the engine crank but was a little unclear on the transition from on screen to mechanical reality. Sadly the intervening years have made me no wiser in this particular aspect.

on board diagnostics?
(one of my aims - but i have no idea how to do it..)

cd player?

dvd player?

video recorder - like a tivo? so that it constantly records a simple video for use after an accident - assuming its not your fault like a looped tape... shuts down after large impact and stores for playback later..

cool factor? :p

threre are plenty of place (for exple in the uK we have www.maplin.co.uk) who sell PCBs with relays on them, that you plug into a com port (or parallel..) that come with simple software that gets the pooter to talk to the board... allows you to ask pooter to turn on the lights for example.
surely this can be linked to a voice control - "turn left" results in indicators flashing LOL

bad typing due to wireless k'board...

The Holley Commander 650 uses a windows based program that allows changing the timing, dwell, injector cycles, etc. costing only what I payed for my car, such a deal. I would really like to play with these settings but can't figure how to bodger something together on my own yet. With the points already replaced with an XR-700 Crane Cams unit, four more eyes strategically placed to be triggered by a single hole or slot in the rotor disc could be used to fire the injectors electronically and do away with the expensive and technologically troubling injector points system.

Rackne: As for any engine controls, be aware that I have to first wait for my PC to boot before loading MP3's (sure, it's like 10-15 seconds, but still, would you want to wait that long to fire your engine?). As for any real PRACTICAL use? Nope. It's purely for entertainment. I could use it to play DVDs at much higher quality on a large TFT LCD screen if I purchased said screen. But I don't have kids that I know of (yet, anyway ) The PC is there purely for my pleasure, and the fact is that the 108's trunk is so MASSIVE that the PC and 13" monitor sit in the rear wheelwell recess in the trunk easily (I might not do such a thing so willingly on a vehicle with a puny trunk).

guydewdney: At least one manufacturer makes actual PCI cards to plug into the PC with relays controlled by "software" but, if one could make drivers themselves (if they don't come with drivers) it would be easy to have it automatically associate commands with opening/closing relays - lights, alarm, etc might be obvious answers. But keep in mind that I have a relay to turn this ON! (the relay is in the ON position unless it gets +12V - the +12V comes from the PC, once it turns on the relay turns off). One could rig a relay into the alarm, then have it turn on the PC and have it do whatever they so please (the camera idea, but for security purposes, IE: What SOB stole my hood ornament?)... possibilites are as limitless as one's own creativity!

windows CE boots pretty quickly...

the camera thing is for parking... im that bad at it i thought about having a set of them so that i can see how much space is left between the bumper nad the wall / railing /car etc. parking in the uk is tight, esp with a car as 'big' as the 114... a volvo is about as big as we get here...

'68Greezer who started this discussion had his car stolen I think and then vanished from sight.

Am wondering if reversing the doors, say hanging the driver's door and hinges on the passenger side, might be path of least resistance with modifications like swapping the glass for suicide door design. Again am thinking 114 Coupe as they have no door pillars and window frames to get in the way.

About the only 'improvement' I might consider on these doors would be the addition of internal side impact beams on pre-'73 models.
Otherwise, if it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it!

Happy Motoring, Mark

C'mon Mark, we can dream caint we? Suicide doors say on 1974 280C that has no wing windows or anything else to get in the way might be do-able project.

You've got a 114 Coupe and should reconnoitre the idea. How much work d'you think it would take?

I've thought of this... if I restore a 108/109 someday, I'm going to have some welded in as long as I make sure that the pieces I weld in wont make an accident WORSE (you know, like jam into my leg like a knife)

I guess I'm jaded by seeing too many cars, boats, houses, etc... ruined by well-intentioned persons who didn't know what the H**L they were doing!
As for suicide doors, since the '59 Fintails, Mercedes has built their cars with a degree of safety-cage construction, including their revolutionary anti-burst cone-type door locks, so any radical change opens up a whole other can-o-worms!
I worried even about having to cut access holes in Miss Daisy's door posts to install my shoulder belts and can only hope that the reinforcing plates I fabricated are enough to restore the strength lost to those holes.
I can kind-of see doing the suicide-mod to a W114 Coupe, but would hope that they never truly become 'suicide' doors. Anyway, the original poster said he planned to make his 'improvement' to a four-door!

Happy Motoring, Mark
