Maybe just a little crazy. But I think the fintail didn't like going that fast, and got back at me. Literally a few hours after I went 100 in it, I was sitting in traffic about 50 miles from home, on a dark cold rainy Saturday night in February. I noticed the car wasn't downshifting right, so I pulled over and checked it out. A transmission cooling line (the thing that connects to the bottom of the radiator area) had broken and fluid was everywhere. As it was a Saturday and horrible weather, there was little I could do but park it and get it fixed later. Luckily I was meeting people there and knew of a good place to get it fixed. But still...I think the car did it on purpose LOL

Talking top speed

'58 220SE Coupe
I saw 194kph (121 MPH) on the autobaughn near Munich. I had the car prepared there for La Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. This was on the way back from 10 laps at the Nurburgring. The speed was shown by a very accurately calibrated rally computer. Unfortunately I rolled over twice on the second day of the Carrera, which ended the race for me. The car is going back together now.

Well last night I went out and tested out the car. My kickdown plate isnt working, so I shifted it on my own. I had it up to 100 four times, and had it up to about 107 once. It didnt seem like it had that much room left. I am thinking that it might have gone up to about 115, but I dont think it could have hit 125. The car does need the valves adjusted BADLY, and might need some timing work. When I do this, I am going to put in an electronic ignition. I will see what she can do afterwards.

90mph

I had my 280CE up to 90mph late one night but I noticed sparks flying out the rear. It was the baffles in the old exhaust disintergrating from the heat. I thought the entire exhaust had fallen off and was dragging on the road! I have not done more than 60mph since then.

135 or so in the 6.9 on the Hardy tollroad in Houston. I was at redline and expected more. Had a tranny leak and they fixed some junk in there, don't know if it had affected top speed or not. Could corner at 95 or so before I had the tie rods replaced. used to wobble like hell at that speed cornering to the right!

85 mph

85 mph and seemed to have a fair amount of pedal left but my ears don't like the noise and my insurance doesn't like the tickets, the car seems to like it and want more.
Every time I lend it to my daugther and she drives it in the city it comes back running better than ever. (first driving lesson in the 240d was to hold the pedal to the floor until you reached the speed you wanted to drive)

I just wanted to resurface this thread so I could hopefully get some others since there is only one record of a fintail in here, a 220SE at 100.

Thanks
David

Since I last posted in here, I've had my 4.5 well over an indicated 140 on 2-3 occasions, with the top being an indicated 145-146...

Tom, is that w/ souped up Euro 3.5 cams'n heads on the 450 engine? And what's the final drive ratio?

And y'all finbody owners oughta be doing long haul runs at 75-80mph all day long steering with your toes as the car rides like its on rails.

(edit: Somewhere can recollect very early 1970's 280SL Pagoda won the 24 hr Daytona oval track record for its class averaging about 100mph. It won the event NOT because it was the fastest car, but because it caused least fatigue on the driver.

Had 3.5 heads and cams when I took it to 145/146. When I had it up to 140 more recently, 1 3.5 cam and 1 4.5 cam. 4.5 cams I think give more low-end power, 3.5's come on hotter later. I want to do a dyno test of 1 of each, then both 4.5 cams, to find the difference to extrapolate the power of 2 3.5 cams. That way I could do a table of RPM/power. Of course, I first need to find a place to do the dynoing...

Final drive is stock (3.27?). I need to find a site to do RPM conversions. I wouldn't be the least surprised to find I was beyond the redline.

110 mph

In my 1971 280 SEL 4.5

On run from Jacksonville to Pensecola FL.

(I have never burned so much oil.)

The only surprising thing was how few cars I was passing that night....

Tom,

I wonder which cams you have? From the cam charts I've seen, the 3.5 and the 4.5 shared the same cam at certain times. My imported '71 300SEL 3.5 has 52/53 cams, and I've found a number of 4.5 cars with the very same cams at the local junkyards (which came in handy when I needed a replacement). What numbers are stamped on the backs of your various cams?

BTW... I've had my recently acquired 300SEL 3.5 up to 150kph (about 93mph). It will easily do much, much more, but I'm holding back until I get an alignment to hopefully remedy the vibration that starts at around 140kph.

-S

You'll love this one!

"In Excess Of 100" is what the speeding ticket says. $425.00 fine for about 30 seconds worth of recless abandon.

That was just a few months after I'd purchased my '66 250SE Coupe back in '92. It was about midnight and I was rolling out onto the freeway when I saw another car blasting along at probably 80+. I hammered the gas and just left him there.

Well guess what. He was being followed by a Sheriff Deputy and they were getting ready to make a DUI/DWI stop on him........when out onto the freeway I came at 100+. Don't know my actual speed because the speedo's in Kilometers but I think they said something about having to do 120 to catch up to me.

Man, was that a stupid and expensive 30 seconds.
