123 dash cluster replacement
The speedo on my 79 280CE sometimes sticks and requires a rap on the dash to get moving and one of the bulbs is out. When I went to pull the cluster last summer and replace the bulb, the glass fell off the front spilling the light/label strips. The cluster stuck and I couldn't get it out far enough to reach behind and change the bulb, so I stuck it back in place and placed the label strips where they are supposed to be and epoxied the glass back on. Forced to put the car into temporary winter service, not being able to see the gauges at nite is an annoyance, plus the strips have slid out of place. Saw a dash cluster on e-bay and bought it for about $25.00. Two questions, seller said to get the old cluster out far enough to pull the connections, I'd have to release the speedo cable from a bracket up under the dash. How? Where? Question 2: My temp gauge is in centigrade, and the new one is in Farenheit (sp?). Is this a problem or is the gauge the same and only the degree markings different?

Guage is the same, just the numbers are different.
I seem to remember that you must use a pair of hooks to pull the W123 cluster, and that a common problem is the hoods popping off and breaking the plastic cover off. Remove the cover under the dash and steering column to get to the speedo cable, I think. Peter

Or you might not have to go under the dash at all...... speedo hookup is finger tight collar nut that can be reached with instrument cluster dangling after you've pulled it from the binnacle..... Btw, on the 123 there's slotted groove at dead center 6:00 position into which hooked specialty tool fits for pulling the entire cluster from the dash.

The best way is to remove the covers (be carefully hinges break off easily) and push the cluster out, tools are not recommended to use to get the cluster out with the 123.
Follow the speedo cable to the transmission, there is a tie-wrap, cut that one, gives you more slack to remove the cluster.
