Purchase of pwr window parts
As Russ said, I am yet to see a 114 coupe with power windows in Australia - maybe Benz thought we were not so technical here back in the 60's - 70's! Power windows have only just become standard on local cars in the past few years.
I would love to buy the complete mechanism for the power windows to ship out and install in my 280CE. I have only just installed Air Conditioning in the 280 from a wreck so we were pretty basic here in the 70's! Any ideas on the purchase of parts? Mark |

No junkyard within 100 miles of me with 114/ 250 or 280 Coupe.... But here's the address of a friend at Indiana USA who tears MB's apart and recylcles the parts..... james < h16671836@yahoo.com > Maybe he can get you everything you need including switches, wiring hook-ups & harness bits, window guides, motor & regulator, etc.... And talkin with this felllow - you'll be speaking with the guy who will pull the parts you need - so you will be sure to get all the screws, nuts, washers and fiddly bits without hassling with middle man. The entire apparatus even shipped from USA to Oz oughta be cheaper and easier than the AC system...... Tell Jim that DieselDog recommended you contact him. Knowing Mercedes Benz, it will probably be conversion where switches fit the door crank holes and sheetmetal will have dimples and ears where bolts go for hanging motors and regulators and gear drive mechanism..... But it aint gonna be easy working without a donor car on hand - wait a minute, somebody on this forum has USA 114/250C project car....... saw the pics here a while ago of boned electric window 250C doors. Thanks Dog
I installed the Air Con myself so I do believe that the pwr window setup would be easier to fit. You are right about the screw/bolt holes being there for the pwr motor as is the clip for the relay and the blank holes for the switches.
Power windows have not become popular on Australian roads - even in luxury vehicles until the past few years. Only European and US imports had them. Japanese models such as Corolla are still sold here with manual windows unless you up-spec them. Thanks for your help Mark 72 280CE 5spd manual 84 Peugeot 505 5 spd 98 Honda Odyssey (wifes car!) |

actually. i was mistaken. i think i've seen one 114 sedan that was in concourse condition in brisbane at a show, with the switches and mechanisms. i've been considering fitting electric windows for a while, but probably an aftermarket system with similar switches etc..
if you get any info give me a call. you've tried mbspares obviously? theres also MB Classic in sydney. and maybe German wrecking up here.... what about a dealer (so long as you want to pay!)

Power windows are listed as a "Special Application" in the US parts book. I only have a hard copy, but could fax or snail mail it to you. It has every part and number needed. Then you can torture your dealer's parts guys.
You can also talk to Bob Neuberth at TMC in Baltimore (410 789 7896). He is the world's best source for W114 parts and he is very good at shipping.

I DO want to go to the junkyard sometime within the next week or two if it's open, so I could look for you (although last time I went and got one for my 108 it was $45 I think, so it might be costly w/shipping)

For the pillarless window structure of the 114 coupes..... ALL of them should have power windows for racing around town with open-air cockpit. Yep, i can see where its a pain in the ass to hand crank all the windows down everytime you drive the car........ I'm thinkin that $375 or less (US dollars) that includes shipping for complete elctric window wiring harness, switches and motors would be a bargain that greatly increases enjoyment of the popular 114 coupe.
Hey you Oztralians..... i will make extra effort to obtain these parts if you will consider swapping a good used 5-spd tranny for my '79 240D..... and i will pay extra for whatever it costs to ship the tranny to Nashville Tennessee, my nearest airport. 5 speed tranny
Dog,
The 5 speed manual for 114/115 are still very rare in Oz but I just so happen to know where one is for sale. It was offerred to me just last week for $1250 Oz dollars (minus @ 30% is US dollars). I understand a lot of 5 spds were exported for the South Africa market. My 5 speeder is a little noisy but I hope with the replacement of a few parts it will be accecptable. You are right about cranking the windows down and up everytime I want to cruise in beaut weather! Mark

mark: on the lookout for a 450SEL 6.9? i was about to buy one of those before the CE. lucky i didn't
the guy who actually bought it used it as a daily driver, he saw the tempreture gauge raise slightly in traffic and did nothing about it. it had devolped a pinhole leak in a lower radiator hose. and leaked the entire contents on the road he's just spent $15k at the place he bought it getting it rebuilt. but damn it went, the guy put a lower diff in it, and tuned it well

"5 speed manual for 114/115....... $1250 Oz dollars (minus @ 30% is US dollars)."
Mark, thats too rich for my kentucky/scotish blood - tossing $800 USD for overdrive tranny plus maybe $200 shipping costs into car that cost me half that amount. Hell, the 114 gearbox probably needs bellhousing/throwout arm adaptation just to fit the pitifully short top-ended 123/240D. WTF, i could probably snag a perfect 110 Heckflosse that I'd rather be driving for the same price that includes sacrifice value in trade on my 123 MB that runs terrific. Otherwise, the only motivator for me to scrounge junkyard parts and put this Oz electic Coupe window deal together would be fair exchange for 5-speed tranny. Meanwhile whatever you do..... you can probably take estimated value for complete imported power 280CE window system at $485 OzD to the bank....... Yep, figure $65 (OzD) each window motor/regulator plus maybe another $75(OzD) for wiring and switches plus the rest in estimated shipping costs. You gotta admit this is probably a bargain downunder that will double bump the value of your car, considering BEST unique feature of 114 coupe is pillarless interior that cannot be fully appreciated with hand crank windows. |
