New Tires

If I was going to buy new tires for my car, what should I buy? I am probably going to spend anywhere from $300-$425. I was maybe going to look into some new Michelins.
Thanks
Tim

Well, I think I paid a bit under $300 for 4 BF Goodrich Advantage T/A tires (205/70R15), which are rated pretty well (and have a better snow-traction rating than the Michelins). I'm very happy with their performance so far and they handle very well. If you do want Michelins, I hear the Symmetrey tires suck so get the Harmony tires. My Jeep has XT Radials and they handle pretty well in the snow but ride a bit loud (then again, it is a Jeep with oversized tires!). They seem to wear decently compared to others we've had on it, I think these have almost 40K on them!

Yokohama Avid Touring

After searching the archives, the tire that came up most often as a good choice was the Yokohama Avid Touring, so those are the one's I recently put on my -73 280SE 4.5. I used a 205/70R/14 with no trouble, replacing some 195/70R/14s. So far, so good. Tires, mounting, and balancing came to $350 here in San Francisco.

Unknown High Performance Tires

A personal friend of mine has owned a tire shop (Southern California) for the past 30 years. He's been driving a 1982 Mercedes 300D since new. He personally uses these tires and I have installed them on 1977 280E.

Sumitomo SRIXON 4

In addition to these tires being a high performance all weather tire ... he says they handle the weight of the Mercedes cars better than most.

The recommended PSI ranges from 36 ~ 51 lbs.
