Unhappy with Adsit sheetmetal

Hit a deer May 05 -- hood shot -- looked everywhere in these parts for decent used hood for 108, no joy. Bite the bullet and order new from Adsit. Arrives today, back edges, closest the windshield are each curled under (and surface rusted) so that sheet metal is poking out the side.

Call to Adsit -- "Joe" says "hey, we been storing it for at least twenty years, it's bound to get beat up. Plus, we store them standing up so that'll happen. Talk to your bodyguy, he can fix it." I pop $700 for a hood and now need to get it fixed!!!!

Didn't tell Joe I'm a lawyer...

yet.

Interesting. Though I've never bought from them, they keep sending me catalogs. So far, I haven't been thrilled with their prices.
However, as of last fall, Potomac German Auto, near Frederick, Maryland, had a silver '69 W108 280SE with, I believe, an intact hood. No idea as to exact condition, price or shipping charges. Check with them at 800-831-7686 or 301-831-1111.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanx for the tip Mark. Had a number of leads, surprisingly there seems to be a lot of 108 sheetmetal out there yet. Unfortunately, not a single used parts guy was nearby with a quality hood or, if far, would email me a picture. I cannot buy used sheetmetal sight unseen. So, me thinks, play it safe and pay the premium for NOS or whatever it is from Adsit. It does have the Mercedes tag and number on it...

Have been plying my sheetmetal skills and it is shaping up.

Still P'd off though...

Too bad, I have a good one you could have had for the cost of shipping.

If your not happy and they blow you off, as long as you paid by credit card, then dispute it. I don't care if the hood is 20 years old if they didn't say it was damaged then they shouldn't have sold you a damaged part.

Your credit card company will get the money back or at least the money you would spend to repair it.

Good luck

You can't just dispute the charge and keep the part. You'd have to send it back, then you can dispute it. The CC company does not simply refund your money if you complain about a product you receive, but they will intervene if a vendor refuses to take it back or issue a refund once they receive it back. I've been through this several times...one thing the CC company always asks for eventually is proof that the item was returned.

If you're unhappy with it, pack it up and send it back...if UPS delivered it you can call them and retroactively refuse it and they will come and pick it up at no cost to you and return it to the seller, you just need to pack it back up in the same box it came in and not tell them you opened it. If it got damaged in shipping UPS should even cover the repair costs, but that's a hassle I have been through once and will never deal with again...so my recommendation is return it.

Thanx for insights folks. FedEx semi dropped it at my house, pretty much stopped traffic on the road out front. This was clearly old damage since it was russted where it sat on end and gradually curled under. I'm probably gonna make the best of it, I have already delayed 10 mos. putting her back on the road looking all over for a hood.

I intend to demand an adjustment from Adsit, depending on how much it costs (or should have cost if my repairs are OK.)

It actually hammered out pretty clean, just should not have been required.

I am still sitting on a chunk of insurance money from the deer hit so the issue is not $ as much as moving forward on this project now.

Sorry to hear that. I got screwed by an engine from them. My mechanic said it had probably been stored for a very long time and we ended up getting a seccond engine from them. They charged us for the shipping ($500 which they said they would cover) after making my mechanic jump through hoops (checking things we already knew were broken). And Joe the engine guy said that all of our problems couldn't have happened because they test their engines before sending them out. I'll buy a parts car before I deal with them again. My car went into the shop in mid August and came out mid December. Luckily my mechanic didn't charge me much for the labor he expended trying to make the first one work.

I did exactly that many years ago. My parents owned a '72 250C, and I needed an engine and tranny for my '72 250 sedan, so I bought a junker 250C for $450.
I was able to hear the engine run, check the oil guage, and even drive it a bit in a parking lot before I paid. Saved as many coupe parts as my parents could store in their attic. As for my sedan, the tranny lasted 5 years and the engine is still good today, 18 years later, though that 250 has now become a parts-car for the 72 250C I inherited from my parents.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Bad customer service should mean complete boycott. I have been hearing horror stories about this company since the mid 80's;. I have called him on a few occasions and he seemed pretty rude. Firt time I thought, "well he is having a bad day." Second time I thought, "strike 2." Third time I told him that HE NEEDED ME AND THAT I DID NOT NEED HIM.
Do yourself a favor, ALWAYS buy from PHIL! Couple of dollars here and there should NOT be an issue if you can have a good relationship with your parts guy.

I had one bad experience with them and never dealt with them again. I ordered a ACC controller for one of my cars which was advertised as being new and turned out to be remanufactured so I sent it back. Hassle, yes, but didn't cost me anything but my time...still I can't stand it when people don't even know what they are selling.
