Weber jet config.
Dear MB friends:
Have my '74 280/M110 engine going, no bizarre noises! My next question: the renewal of this car includes ones one of those Weber 38DGAS conversion kits. Seems like it's going to work good, but now I think I need to replace the idle jets to make it run better. It runs too lean; I have to back the screws out way too far... I read elsewhere on this forum that others have experimented, and thus arrived at, a good jet configuration. What jet sizes do you suggest, and where do you suggest I obtain them? Thanks, Will |

Worse too lean than too rich!
For jets I know of one place: http://www.redlineweber.com/Redline.htm I suggest you consider adding an O2 sensor at the collector, just below the exhaust manifold where exhaust gases have mixed to some degree, and connect it to a A/F ratio indicator in order to "see" what mixture you have in a dynamic, running way. Unless of course you have a local dyno available and the $ available to pay for using it. You can always leave the A/F meter installed somewhere unless you think it would degrade the stock appearance of the interior. They make some with LED's that are pretty flashy, but the result is that you can fine-tune the mixture at anytime to keep the setting proper for the way you want to drive. DDH

Make sure you don't have a vac leak at idle before changing the jets.
This means door locks and seat backs (coupe) must work, ditto for AC switchover, and the brake booster must be good. Otherwise, you have a problem in the carb -- the idle jets are sized for correct mixture at the correct idle opening, so unless you have the wrong carb on there (way too big or little), they should be OK. Don't know off the top of my head how far out they should be -- I know Holley is usually 1 1/2 turns and Rochester is 2 1/2 turns from closed, but that won't help. How far out is too much? 5 turns? 10 turns? Peter
