oil filter: 450 SEL 4.5L

People:

I'm picking up an oil filter this weekend to change oil in above-noted vehicle.

Going on-line, all the majors seem to list same Purolator number (L20011) for my 450 as well as later 1980's 8 cyl. models. I know from experience that these later models have the top-located cannister (easy access), and my filter's on the bottom of front end.

Is filter really the same for both??????

Thanks for the info.

Bob

Yup. Just a different filter canister.

If you're gonna go American, by the Wix filters, they are as good as the German ones (but not cheaper....).

Thanks Peter.

I'll look at the Wix filters. A local independent parts shop carries them.

***TO PETER: P.S.

pETER:
oNE MORE THING. i'VE ONLY DOEN THE FITLER REPLACEMENTS ON MY EARLIER '80S OVERHEAD CANNISTER MODELS.

ANY PARTICULAR TIPS FOR THIS LOWER MOUNTED CANNISTER? I DON'T WANT TO MAKE ANY STUPID ERRORS.

Also: on my cannister, what tools/size do I need?

Thanks again.

not sure as of the subframe placement in the 116 chassis, but in the 108, it's easiest to get to the 4.5's canister from underneath.
I use the Hengst filters (from FastLane or mbz.org), they're pretty cheap and seem to do a good job.

You need, I believe, a 13mm wrench to remove the canister, a 14mm allen to remove the oil plug, and a 17mm wrench to remove the drain plug on the oil cooler.

Best procedure on the W108 is to drain the oil, then put the plug back in and move the drainpan under the filter housing. so that any oil that drips out hits the pan instead of the floor.
