Cleaning Trigger points

Hi Folks,

OK-tonight's the night in my garage. It's time to begin work.

Think I am clear about cleaning the trigger points---use a piece of papar, nothing too abrasive since points are platinum. My question is, after pulling them out and cleaning them, do I need to reset the timing and how do I do that?

Thanks very much in advance.

As I understand it, the trigger points tell the fuel injection when/how to function, so I doubt cleaning the trigger points affects (ignition) timing. However, pulling the distributor to actually get TO the trigger points seems to implicate re-timing the beast

I am sure you will receive some useful input soon. Good luck.

kpb hit the nail on the head
You have to remove the dizzy to take the points out and clean them, and doing so means that, when you put it back on, you'll have to retime the beast.

You need an inductive timing light hooked on to wire #1, and you need to be able to see the pointer and read the numbers on the harmonic balancer (easier said than done, the rad hose gets in the way). Clean the balancer off, find the 5*ATDC marking (with it not running of course) and mark it with a bit of silver (or other high-contrast) paint.
