Temptation!

This morning, on the way to a job I spotted a W108 sticking out of a driveway with a 'For Sale' sign in the back window. On the way home I stopped to talk with the owner. It's a '67 250S, WITH A MANUAL 4 SPEED! Power steering, no AC. The car is from Seattle where it spent most of it's life. It's cream with a red Tex interior. Owner started removing stuff for repainting/renovation. Dash pad and windshield wood is in the back seat. Front bumper, horns and headlight assemblies are off but with the car. Except for some nicks and a ding beside the R F headlight bucket it appears to be mostly rust free. The only cancer I saw was a couple of one inch spots in the rear fenders, behind the wheels.
It has a bad power brake booster and a small crack in the windshield. Runs well but needs other work due to sitting. Owner is asking $1500 as is. I'm planning a better look this weekend when the weather is nicer.
I need another car like I need another hole in my head! Perhaps some other local Mercedes Shop forum member will want to snap it up and remove this temptation from me.

Happy Motoring, Mark

As a friend and former owner of a manual 280SE once told me "These cars feel 500 pounds lighter with a stick-shift!"

Maybe we can check it out together. I work in Newington and get off work Saturday Morning. Want to meet for breakfast? I'll be driving the 300SE.

That would be fine as I'm planning another look anyway. I'll be driving 'Miss Daisy'. Call me or let me have your number.

another 108 to the crusher (?)

I was gonna start this as a new thread but, with the above link to a sweet, all-inclusive resto job, may be it should go here since it is the other end of the spectrum.

I had spotted a '72 280SE 4.5 sinking in the mud in a yard about 8 miles from me. Stopped in and spoke with the fellow (who did not really understand English) and inquired about it as a parts car. This was about 2 weeks ago. The car is even the same color as mine! Thoroughly trashed black MB tex interior and reportedly a "locked up" engine, four flat tires, rough looking overall but barely rusted (with the sunroof.) Still I figured, what the heck, have it flat-bedded to my place and sit it by the barn to at least be a donor.

Went by today to seal the deal (was gonna offer $50) and its GONE! So were the other six vehicles which were also sinking in the mud. Nobody home, gotta figure its scrap now. Dammit...

Weird thing about the stick shift..... it will make the car TOUGHER to sell. I learned this when selling my 4-spd 116 last October...... Had several buyers who backed off on the stick shift - its like nobody knows how to drive em anymore....... we've got an entire generation of drivers out there who have never touched a standard shift car.

And yet there's people that will move heaven and earth to get a stickshift or convert theirs to one. (See some of Chuck Taylors postings) The W116 is considered more of a luxury boat in the US and the stickshift versions were never sold here. I've only seen one and that was a greymarket '76 280S.
I'm not that worried about resale if I decide to get this car but I don't really have a place to keep it and I'm still attached to 'Miss Daisy'.

sounds like me a year ago....

I ran across a similar one a year ago - manual 250s, 4 spd, a little rust. Owned by a lady in a trailer park who was selling it to pay her rent (or support her habit - you choose)... She was ready to deal and was going to let it go for like $800. I never made the trip (bad part of town, low on funds, etc) - now I wish I had....

Be sure to post your followup on the experience !

I spoke with Mark and the owner can only show the car around 1:00 p.m. and I'll be in bed at that time. If the time were earlier, I'd go. So it's up to Mark.

We could have another local GTG sometime soon. The weather is getting better.
