Gas in oil... or oil in gas?

Well, my Benz only went ~1500 since I last changed the oil, but it smelled of gas and it had pretty low pressure at idle, so I decided to change it.

It was so thin that it was almost like water! Would anyone know WHY my oil would be reduced to this state? Must've been an awful lot of gas, right? I MIGHT have put a quart in between the changes but I don't know, I definetly didn't put two in!

Should I test my compression, is somehow the gas getting through? Bad rings? I don't have leaky injectors. I wasn't running THAT rich!

I know nothing about your particular car, but that is a symptom of a failed diaphragm in the mechanical fuel pump on vehicles which have them.

No mechanical fuel pump on a 4.5.
Gas in oil is also a symptom of rich fuel mixture or much short-trip, stop & go winter driving or combination of these conditions.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Chances are you are running that rich -- no other way for gas to get in the oil on that car.

Pull the plugs and take a look at them -- if you have some black and some not, you have injector problems. If they are all black, you're running WAY rich.

You also need to drive it enough to get it fully warmed up (20 min or so at least at 175F or more) every week -- this thing runs very rich when cold, and could easily dilute the oil if you only drive a couple miles and then shut it off all the time.
