Well first of all dog, if you think this is pointless then don't read it or post on it. I am not just some kid coming in here and asking for help on my HS paper. I am a member of this forum and am on here an average of two hours a day. How are these models unrelated? The w108 and w109 are almost identical. The w116 was just the next S-class that Mercedes made. I an writing a paper that spans the years of the S-class that these models were built in. I am doing a research paper on just about any topic we want. I chose this because I enjoy anything about old Mercedes, and I figured it would give me a chance to leanr more about my car. Pictures, graphs, etc. don't count towards the 15 pages. So that wont work. I could not write 15 pages of text on MB V-8s.

benz stuff on the web

There's plenty. For starters, visit www.mbz.org. Then www.mercedes-veterans.com.

A google search for "300sel mercedes" should find plenty, for instance

Thanks. I've been hibernating the past 15 months. Got a job a Bloomberg, LP that wants my warm body some 50/hrs week. Started the 'thaw' on my 1 year anniversary by buying a 1964 model 600 , a 1964 300se sedan, and a lift for the garage. I just spent the past two months devoting every spare minute to emptying the garage, installing the lift and refilling the garage (the zoning police were not at all happy with me.

Last week a guy asked for some help and I sent him here by reflex and then realized that I hadn't been by for some time, so as of last night, "I, back".

Getting back to this particular thread, I hope the young man has more than enough meat for his paper now. Don't forget to write the footnotes for the web refrences correctly. If they didn't show you that in school, and you can't find a reference on the web for how to do it, remind me to ask my wife, she's the real librarian in the family. -CTH

Well, thanks for all of your help. I am working on writing the paper right now as it is due Wed. I am mostly just going to explain some specs about the cars that were incuded in these series. I don't think that it should be that hard considering I just wrote about 1/2 page on the 250S. It will be easy once I start talking about the M-100.
Thanks
Tim

As you compare models, you can note the addition of chrome and the down playing of other creature comforts in the model lines. The difference between an S and SE is mostly fuel injection, but also a few pounds of chrome & aluminum trim.

Also don't forget the watershed event of the 1967 imposition of safety standards and environmental regulations in the US. That doomed the pretty wood windshield surrounds. It also meant that the US market suddenly became a different place from the european.

Lastly attitudes towards these cars differ here and there. In europe, the mercedes was a taxi & workhorse in the 70s, but a luxury car here. Not sure if there were a lot of euro delivered S class cars for that reason.

Nowadays, these cars are scarce in europe. Thanks to the weak dollar, there's a market for exporting them.

yes we were suprised on arrival in france that 90+% of mercedes are taxi's, even the s class cars. once we left france there were more privately owned cars (holland, germany, italy), most with stick shifts and cloth interiors. by contrast our benzes are very very upscale

Don't confuse taxis with work horses. It's true that Mercedes-Benz is a common brand among taxi cabs, but this is due to their durability, comfort and long diesel traditions. In Europe, if you drive an MB for private transportation, it's definitely considered a luxury car.

If you go to England, you'll be surprised to see how many old Rolls-Royces and Bentleys that are still in traffic. And you wouldn't believe how many brand new Volvo's I see everytime I look out the window...

Thumbs up Try Geoffrey Howard's excellent book...

...entitled MERCEDES BENZ S-CLASS, Arco Publishing, 1985.

It has a wonderful section about the development of the W116 Series, which won the 1974 Car of the Year.
