AT Fluid Level Question
Hey guys, just wondering the steps i should take to check the AT fluid levels.... I drive a w116 280s
with my other car i have to take it for a drive for 5 minutes, go through the gears and put it in park (while idling) and check the level then...... But someone told me the other day that you are ment to check it while the engine is off??? should i check it while cold or warm???? and what should i top it up with??? Dextron III? the previous owner used ATF Ford type 'D' fluid...... Thanks guys..... sorry for the 'simple' question, but its got me puzzled....

Check hot, on a level surface, idling in Park. Same as always.
Note that MB tranny dipsticks are notoriously difficult to read -- let the fluid drain back with the dipstick out for at least a minute, or you may have touble detrmining the level. All MB trannies since 1969 have used Dextron tranny fluid, but the only thing using Type A will do is firm up the shifts, they are otherwise compatible (by law). Peter
