here, here.

I love my old-school black one. It kinda makes me feel like when I was a kid - its so big. Very comfy though and it seems to stay cooler in the summer. I looked at some kind of '73 model here a while back and it had that newer wheel and it just looked wrong. Couldn't get myself to investigater further - the cream color with light brown interior didn't help.

on the wheel issue...

hey all, since we're focused here on the steering wheel. how does one go about removing the large center "pad" with the MB insignia? my horn ring seems a tad sloppy but I do not want to destroy this center piece, it seems a bit brittle. i assume it just prys off but would like advice before i do something regretable. victim is a 72 280SE 4.5.

Since you mentioned the horn ring, am assuming you're tallkin about the old style wheel. Center pad is held on with 3 or 4 ribbed hollow plastic dowels that grab into holes on the pad back.... you've got to grab the pad and rock it back and forth, then yank it straight off with your hands - possibly breaking a couple of dowels in the process. White pads that have discolored with age can be touched up with vinyl spray paint, masking the emblem and ring. Removing the pad has nothing to do with the emblem in the center.

thanx "dog"

i assumed your method of removal would do it. btw, this is a black, "old school" wheel which is in fine cosmetic condition. i just wanna see why the left side of my horn ring seems sloppy even though the horn works a-ok. mostly the slop in the ring makes itself known at about 90-95 when it begins to jiggle and clang a bit maybe that should be my warning to get off the gas...

update -- just went out and popped off my pad after letting the car get nice and warm in the sun -- could not discern anything to tighten to take the slop out of the horn ring so I wedged some thin strips of sponge on top of the ring under the pad and that did the trick AND, the horn still beeps upon command.

kpb,

Did your steering wheel make a metallic rattling sound? Mine makes a rattling sound that goes away when I apply pressure to the steering wheel. I was wondering if you were having the same kind of noise and how you got rid of it?

hey M_Anker

My rattle was obviously a bit of slop in the horn ring, not the steering wheel itself. If yours seems to be in the actual wheel, you could pop your center hub pad and take a peek inside, there is a deep weel where miscellaneous tools, parts, small animals could hide and rattle

If your horn ring is the source of the rattle, my last post relates to my "fix"
