Window regulator replacement notes

Did my first regualtor replacement today following all the tips from those that went before. Not to bad a job but I thought I would post a few thoughts while they are freash in my mind. This is the left side.....right side later today/tomorrow.

First....followed TomGuys suggestion about have the window halfway down. That placed the channel that bolts to the window with 10mm bolts right below the top of the opening.....this gets important later.

Second.....shoved the window all the way up and braced it with a piece of dowel.

Third.....Undid the three nuts for the regulator. Oops, one of those was for something else and the top nut was still attached.

Fourth....dropped the regulator assy only to find out that I needed to undo the bolts for the window channel so it would move out of the way.

Fifth....twisted, pulled, pushed, etc. until the whole assy gave birth. Still not sure what the magic formula was but it finally came out.

Sixth...removed the window channel and motor. NOTE: the regulator must be in a certain position to access the motor bolts. As luck would have it they were perfectly aligned with the window at 50% when I started the process. One bolt is a bear because it is very close to the regulator gear and is tough to get a wrench on the head, especially when resinstalling with a new regulator as there was no slop.

At this point I also found the the motor gear shaft was horribly loose. Lots of play which probably contributed to the eating of the teeth. Fortunetly, I had (on the spur of the moment) picked up two motors on ebay for a song and the left one was nice and tight.

Seventh....reinstalled back into the birth channal. Not sure what the secret was but there seems to be only one way to get it in. I think the top had to go in first.

IT WORKS.

Did the Right side today and it had an interesting set of problems.

The frame where the motor attaches was terribly distorted and even cracked. The motor gear housing was bent so bad it almost opened up. As a consequence, the motor gear was offset to one side and was only contacting half of the regulator gear. Those teeth were shaved off for 1/2 of the thickness so when you looked at it from the front the gear looked intact.

Once again, the motor shaft bushing was worn oblong so the gear would move sideways in one direction but not in the other. Probably due to the axial loading. Used my last ebay motor and will try to rebush the old ones.

When I bought the car, the PO said he had just replaced the right side regulator and thought the window might be "off the track" as an explantion as to why it didn't work properly. Personally, I think that whoever pulled the regulator off the donar car used a prybar to get it out of the door.

Oh well......

Litton: That's how my old gear was worn as well - the aluminum frame had cracked and the motor rode it at an angle, wearing the inside to nothing and keeping the outside intact (except for the last 2 teeth on the top). Fortunatley the one I grabbed from the yard was fine, but this is a big design flaw - weak cast aluminum or whatever alloy it is + stress from large spring and heavy window which are opposite forces (which means large uneven stress on one side) = cracked frame!

I have noticed that the window (right) is binding at the halfway point . Lot of strain not up but not down. Something I need to pay atttention to before I button everything up.

I think you're right Tom about the casting...not good.
