1959 300d Adenauer

My wife spotted an old Mercedes yesterday, so we went to see it today. It is a 1959 300d, in light green. It seems to be generally in very good condition. Body is very straight with a few small marks but no major damage. Paint needs a good buffing. All the chrome seems to be there. Interior is good, with dark green leather showing wear, but I saw no major flaws. Interior woods was good with some weather checking; original Becker Mexico.

The old gentlemen that owned it started it up and the engine was very quiet - almost no valve train noise. I didn't drive it, but he says he drives it now and then. He purchased it in California.

So this is a W189, I think, right? Is this considered an Adenhauer, or are only the earlier 300c W186 known as Adenhauers?

What price range would a car like this be worth?

Thanks for any information.

I’m no expert but I believe its still an Adenauer. I should be worth from 58000€ for a top condition car, to 12000€ for one in poor condition.

My favorite of the vintage Mercedes, when I have the disposable income that will be the model I'll go after. Can't offer advice, but man, that would be what I'd want to be seen in shiny paint or not.

mercedes 300

The Mercedes Benz 300 sedan built from 1951-1962.They are nicknamed adenauers after Konrad Adenauer chancellor of germany in the 50s who always rode in one for over 10 years. They are worth from $2000 to maybe $40K depending on condition.Cabriolets being worth even more. These cars are very expensive to restore.

I was in West Virginia on the weekend with the friend. His boss has a pair of 300b and a pair of 300d cars. They're great old lovely cars. One of the 300b's is a parts car for the other. One of the 300d's has a divider.

The SCM Guide shows $14-18K for a 300d.

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate the information. I'm trying to increase my knowledge on these beautiful old cars, so as to be able to talk to this person a bit more intelligently. He suggested he might be willing to sell, but I didn't press him on this, as I had no idea of worth.

Here is the link to an excellent site devoted to the Adenauer. Use it to do your research -- it's pretty darn complete. I think these are one of the most beautiful cars ever built. But as said before, they're unbelievably expensive to restore.
