No luck in Diesel discussion trying again in the Vintage Mercedes

Engine oil change silly question.
I was reading the manual (CD version) and it states that there are 3 versions of 615.912. 1.º up to chassis end n.º 120829 and 2.º starting in 120830 and 3º… I. What nº is this? Chassis or engine n.º ?

Sorry for the silly question but I’m not an English or mechanics expert.

Thanks in advance.

The 615 number refers to the engine. The 12xxx numbers refer to the chassis and should be prefixed by "123". When the cars were newer and original there was a correlation between the engine and chassis numbers. But if you are chasing an engine part, you are probably better off using the engine number since your engine may have been replaced.

Hope this helps.

Thanks ctaylor, my engine n.º its 615.912-12-034828, is there a way to know if it 1º, 2º. or 3º version? The papers are from 83 so if the engine was change it was in the US before it came to Portugal.

VCR: Just wondering - you need to know this for an oil change? What do you need to know, maybe someone else can fill you in? 115.110.12-****** should apparently be in your chassis number/VIN, those last 6 digits should answer what version it is.

edit: Note this refers to chassis number or VIN and not the engine serial!

VCR, post your full vehicle identification number and someone here will be able to look up the original engine number for you. Then you will be able to check for a match.

Here it goes:

Chassis – 115 110 12 347607
Engine – 615 912 12 034828

And the reason I’m trying to find the version of my engine is that I need to change the joint of the oil pan and it looks like there is difference in size from version to version.

You are absolutely correct, it took 2 minutes for the parts department to get me the joint of the oil pan and the oil filter, the employee was surprised to have then in stock, they here covered whit dust but they had them. The joint is the Part n. º MA616 014 01 22 for 13.41€.

Change the oil and filter this weekend, (my first time), what a messy job but in the end I did it.

8L Castrol GTX3 17,89€ (special promotion 50% discount)
Oil filter 6.96€
Total 24.85€

Plus: 1 hours of work to actually do it and 3 hours to clean the garage and my person.

Didn’t change the joint, because I can’t raise the car in the garage, and couldn’t clean the air filter. The connection rubbers of the air filter are totally cracked so I didn’t touch it. I was afraid they would turn in to dust. I hope that they are sold separate because the air filter is quite expensive.

Glad you found the part. I tried to look up your VIN in my datacard system, but it wasn't listed. Maybe someone else here has a better version of it if you still want to know about the numbers matching.

Thans Rick, Ill speak whit a German friend and see if I can get the information directly from Mercedes. Specially to see if this engine is the original because if it is, then it must be the 1º version.
