the fron of the block. Does anyone know what it means? (I assumed it was a factory exchange engine. )

Yes that is a factory crate motor. Tauschaggregat loosely translates to exchage unit. You might be able to get some info from Mercedes using the number on the second line, aggregat #..

can you help with this

I just bought a 1976 240d but I am sure it is not a 240d engine. It has a tag on the engine "Original Mercedes-benz Tauschaggregat teil-nr 615010800088
aggregat NR 627402
I am thinking it is a 220 d engine.
What are the differances in HP between the 2 the car cost only $200 has great paint no reverse and some tears in the seats but it was the coler I wanted and is very restorable. The man I purchased it from was building it for his son and gave up when one cylnder would not fire. It turened out one of the new injectors and I belive they are new injectors not rebuilt ones was bad and sprayed no fuel. This car has a ton of new parts nice tires new battry, clutch, motor and tranny mount. I am worried thatb the no reverce is because he used a 220d engine if that is what it is with a 240d transmission and I will have to alter the linkage to make reverce work. Are dealer here is not very helpfull on old cars but I will try to pry some info out of them tomorrow. Any info you have would be greatfullly Appreciated.

My reference lists the OM615 motor for the 220D and later 200D and the OM616 for the early 240D. There's only a difference of about 5 hp between the 220D and 240D engines. That 615 in your engine tag indicates it's a 220D engine. As I recall, on those manual floorshifts, you have to pull up or push down on the lever before you can move it to reverse. I don't think the different engine should affect reverse gear.

Thank you so much Mark DiSilvestro

Thank you so much Mark DiSilvestro. You saved me countless hours screwing with the transmission linkage while I await my manuals. You pull up to go into reverse.
I now wonder If MBZ will tell me when the engine was sold so I can try to gauge its mileage. I wonder why they put a 220 d engine in a 240 d. one thing for sure doing that is the engine shocks don’t fit

Sometimes, the simple solutions are the best.

We had a customer's '69 stick-shift 280S at the BMW repair shop where I used to work. My boss couldn't find reverse either.

I'm sure someone must have gotten a great deal on that 220D engine. If it runs satisfactory, I wouldn't worry unless you plan on making a show-car.

Happy Motoring, Mark
